Rome is not only an ancient city and a tourist destination but also a high-quality affordable education hub. From medicine to law, and theology, the universities in the city provide an opportunity for higher education with minimal tuition rates.

The number of international students studying in Rome has gradually increased over the years, and getting to most of its elite institutions has become more difficult due to the influx of applicants. For degree-seeking students looking for schools but are adamant that they can’t get in and are too expensive for their budget, here’s a list of institutions that accept overseas students and provide budget-friendly tuition.

Affordable Universities in Rome

1. Sapienza University of Rome

The Sapienza University of Rome, also called the University of Rome, is the top public university located in the city. The university was founded in 1303 and has a rich history of over 700 years. Currently, it is one of the prominent universities in Italy with the highest enrollments. It is often ranked as the number one university in Italy and among the top 100 universities in the world.

It comprises around 65 departments that offer undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral-level degrees in the fields of business, economics, engineering, law, health sciences, etc. Graduates of the school have become competent professionals in their respective fields, with some notable alumni including three Nobel Prize holders and various other researchers.

2. Guglielmo Marconi University

Guglielmo Marconi University provides high-quality education and research facilities at a much cheaper tuition fee. Located in Rome, the institution is a research university founded in 2004 in Rome and not only offers on-campus degrees but also has a very well-established Internet teaching facility. It is also regarded as the first open university in Rome. In addition to having a main campus in Rome, it also has sub-campuses in other cities of Italy.

3. Pontifical Gregorian University

Founded in 1551, the Pontifical Gregorian University is one of the cheapest universities in Rome. At first, it was a part of Roman College and attained the status of an autonomous university in 1556.

It is best known for higher studies in theology, philosophy, law, and social sciences, attracting students from all over the world, especially those who are interested in theology and philosophy. The university now comprises more than 3,800 students from 150 different countries in the world. Laymen and women also make up more than 30% of the total students. Pontifical Gregorian University is however best known for its philosophy program.

4. LUMSA University

The LUMSA University (Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta University) is a Roman Catholic private university founded in 1939 in Rome. It began as an educational institute and was recognized as a university in 1989. Although it was founded as a private institute, the university is now part of the Italian national universities network and offers high-quality education with minimal tuition cost.

LUMSA University has a student body of 6,000 plus, which allows interactive classroom sessions with professors and enhances opportunities for quality education.

 

Because of some of its universities’ small student population and affordable tuition, Italy has slowly attracted international students from all over the world over time. With this strong factor at hand, international students can also enroll in the above universities as some offer English-taught programs.
