FAQs about Fully Funded Scholarships
What Are Fully Funded Scholarships?
We define fully funded scholarships as “scholarships that at least cover full tuition and living expenses.” If a certain scholarship meets that criteria, we define it as fully funded. This is different from full-tuition scholarships, which cover tuition only. Some fully funded scholarships for international students, especially government-funded scholarships, may also include benefits such as airfare, health insurance, accommodation, and language programs.
Is There a Difference Between Full-Ride and Fully Funded Scholarships?
No, they generally mean the same thing. Full-ride and fully funded scholarships usually cover full tuition, room, and board for undergraduate students and full tuition plus a living stipend for Master’s and Ph.D. students. The term full-ride scholarship is more common for undergraduate awards, but the meaning is similar. To see a list of these scholarships by degree level, check out Undergraduate Scholarships, Master’s Scholarships, and Ph.D. Scholarships.
How Do International Students Qualify to Get These Fully Funded Scholarships?
Requirements differ by scholarship. Many scholarships require strong academic records, recommendation letters, and proof of English proficiency through exams such as TOEFL or IELTS. Some undergraduate scholarships may require SAT or ACT scores, while some graduate scholarships may require GRE or other program-specific tests. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee selection because fully funded scholarships are highly competitive, so students should apply to several suitable opportunities.
