Top Schools Offering Data Science in the Netherlands
1. University of Amsterdam
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) dates back to 1632, when its predecessor, the Athenaeum Illustre, was founded, and it is a highly ranked research university.
UvA is ranked 53rd in the 2026 QS World University Rankings, making it one of two Dutch universities in the QS global top 100 for that edition.
It offers the Data Science track within the MSc Information Studies, developed in collaboration with Amsterdam Data Science (ADS). This 60 ECTS English-taught master’s program can be taken full-time or part-time; due to visa requirements, students from outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland cannot join the part-time program. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO), and successful graduates receive a legally recognized master’s degree in Information Studies and the title of Master of Science (MSc).
2. Delft University of Technology
The oldest and largest technical university in the Netherlands, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) has a strong focus on both education and research. The green, park-like university campus stretches over 161 hectares, making it one of the largest university campuses in the world.
TU Delft’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science (EEMCS) offers prospective students the Master of Science (MSc) in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Technology. This 120 EC, 24-month, full-time program focuses on both AI and data science, including data management, because AI components and systems are often data-driven.
This two-year qualification builds on a common core and allows students to choose Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Technology themes that match their interests and career goals.
Another great perk of studying at TU Delft is that students can explore international opportunities, including exchanges, internships, projects, or thesis work abroad.
3. Eindhoven University of Technology
Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is considered a young university, even though it was founded in 1956. Part of the appeal of TU/e is that it works with other educational institutions in the Netherlands and abroad, supporting interdisciplinary research and an enhanced impact on science and society.
TU/e’s Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Data Science is a joint program with Tilburg University. Students take lectures in both Eindhoven and Tilburg and benefit from the combined expertise of both universities. This three-year, English-taught undergraduate qualification is worth 180 ECTS and covers topics such as data mining, statistics, and the ethics of data science.
Students who want to continue in this field can pursue TU/e’s Master of Science (MSc) in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence. This English-taught master’s program runs for two years and is aimed at postgraduate students who want to study and research advanced data analysis and Artificial Intelligence (AI), with the goal of understanding, developing, and using intelligent systems. This master’s is also the only engineering program in the Netherlands that combines advanced methods and techniques in Data Science and AI.
For students specializing in data science, TU/e offers a technical, career-oriented educational experience. The Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science and the Mathematical Institute, in collaboration with the Leiden Centre of Data Science, offer prospective students the Master of Science (MSc) in Computer Science, with a specialization in Data Science.
This two-year, 120 EC, research-oriented master’s program requires applicants to have appropriate prior knowledge and skills in a variety of areas, including algorithms, data structures, computing theory, Python programming, statistics, probability theory, artificial intelligence, data mining, and machine learning.
Along with thorough training in data science, the program also offers students the flexibility to design their study path by choosing from a wide variety of specialized electives in statistical and computer science. Students in this program also have the opportunity to complete elective courses, or their research projects, abroad.
5. Utrecht University
Founded in 1636, Utrecht University is a broad international research university based in Utrecht, Netherlands. In the 2026 QS World University Rankings, it is ranked 103rd globally, placing it among the higher-ranked universities in the Netherlands.
Unlike many of the other master’s degrees we’ve looked at, the Master of Science (MSc) in Applied Data Science has a strong focus on problem-solving and practical application in the real world. Applied Data Science recognizes that similarities exist in data challenges across various fields, and as such, this qualification covers five focus domains: Health Science, Economics, Geoscience, Social and Behavioral Science, and Media Studies. This fast-paced academic master’s program is accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) and runs for one year full-time.
Enormous amounts of valuable data are constantly being acquired across virtually all aspects of society, and this calls for a need to analyze and understand information in order to make informed decisions and solve problems in a variety of domains.
