York University is the third-largest university in Canada. Founded in Toronto in the year 1959, it offers more than 170-degree options to both local and international students.

York University is divided into three campuses, including Keele – the main branch located in Northern Toronto. It’s the prime location of the residential colleges of Calumet, Founders, McLaughlin, Norman Bethune, Stong, Vanier, Winters, and New College.

Undergraduate tuition at York ranges from $24,000 (Computer Science program) to $27,800 (Commerce program). Tuition for graduate studies, on the other hand, is cheaper. At the Faculty of Graduate Studies, for example, a Master’s program only costs about $10,600 a year.

Application Fee at York University

To apply at York University, prospective undergraduate students need to pay a non-refundable application fee of about $125. This only covers 3-course choices, so for an additional one, the student must pay another $40. Graduate students, on the other hand, only need to pay an application fee of about $105.

This can be paid online using a Visa Credit/Debit Card or Mastercard. Students without the said cards may contact the Office of Admissions for another payment method.

Admissions Requirements at York University for International Students

While undergraduate requirements vary from program to program, all of them require a high school diploma and a transcript of records. Depending on the demand for the course, it may levy a certain grade/point for admission.

The minimum IELTS and TOEFL requirements for undergraduate students are as follows:

Graduate students, on the other hand, will need to have a Bachelor’s (Hons) degree or equivalent. A minimum grade of B (or equivalent) is also required, though some programs may require a higher one. York University is listed as the 18th best in Canada by the World Rankings. Internationally, it is placed in the 401-500 bracket. As for impact rankings, it is named the 33rd in the world.

York University is highly-ranked in Law (rank 43), as well as Business & Economics (101-125) and the Arts & Humanities (151-175).

Shanghai Rankings also place York University at the 401-500 bracket. The Business & Economics programs, delivered by the world-famous Schulich School of Business, remain the same place at the 101-150 bracket.

While the university is mum about its acceptance rate, estimates show that it admits 27% of its applicants. However, another report shows that the university’s acceptance rate for undergraduate applicants is higher at 89%.

The Graduate Schools, however, are more stringent with admission – having only an acceptance rate average of 11%. This is especially the case for the competitive MA/Ph.D. programs in Business and Law.

Undergraduate Scholarships

1. President’s International Scholarship of Excellence

President’s International Scholarship of Excellence is one of the most prestigious awards in York, valued at $180,000 ($45,000 a year x 4). The scholarship recipients will be chosen from high-achieving international students who have a high commitment to volunteer work, extracurricular activities, and leadership skills.

2. York University Automatic Entrance Scholarship

This York University scholarship is given to applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who have an admission average of at least 80%. The amount given will depend on the student’s grade and eligibility. For example, an applicant with an IB score of 42-45 may be entitled to a scholarship amount of about $3,200.

This scholarship is renewable for 3 years depending on the student’s course load and GPA. As such, the applicant must maintain a GPA of at least 8.0 and a course load of 24 units to continue receiving the scholarship.

3. Glendon International Scholarship

The Glendon International Scholarship is available to foreign students enrolled in the said college. To qualify for this York University scholarship for international students, the applicant must have a grade of 85% and demonstrate leadership potential – as well as financial need.

Winners are chosen from nominations coming from school or community organizations. Apart from that, the applicant must also submit a 300-word essay that showcases his/her leadership skills – and possible contributions to Glendon College.

4. Tentanda Via Award

The Tentanda Via Award is offered to students who best exemplify the core values of York University. Recipients of this award include student leaders, changemakers, and those who are active in volunteer activities. Good academic standing is required to be eligible for this award. An application form, personal statement, and financial profile must also be submitted before the deadline.

Graduate Scholarships

1. York University Minimum Funding Commitment

York University offers excellent graduate students a minimum funding commitment. If given this commitment at the time of enrollment, the students will receive at least full tuition. If the student has more scholarships like TA or RA, the students can receive a stipend also to support a living stipend

2. Armand and Denise LaBarge Graduate Scholarship in Multiculturalism

The Armand and Denise LaBarge Graduate Scholarship in Multiculturalism is given to one MA or Ph.D. student who demonstrates academic excellence in their fields of study. True to its’ name, this York University scholarship for graduate international students places much consideration on an applicant who promotes Multiculturalism, Diversity, and Human Rights.

Available as a one-time award, it requires applicants to submit an accomplished application form, curriculum vitae, and transcript of records to the Scholarship and Awards Coordinator.

3. Joyce and Fred Zemans Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: up to CAD 3,333 (variable – depends on the endowment fund)

The Joyce and Fred Zemans Non-Renewable Scholarship is given to 3 students from the Graduate Program in Art History, the Schulich School of Business MBA Program, and the Osgoode Hall Law School Graduate Program in Law.

While there are preferred qualifications for applicants, the general requirements include forthcoming/present enrollment and proof of academic accomplishments. Other necessary documents include a letter of nomination from the Program Director, curriculum vitae, and transcript of records. A Statement of Research is also required from Art History and Law majors.
