Ukraine remains one of the more affordable European study destinations for international students, with relatively low tuition fees and living costs compared with many other European countries. Ukrainian universities continue to offer programs for international students, including on-campus and, in some fields, distance or online options, so students should check the format and safety guidance for their chosen program before applying. Current official cost guidance lists tuition from about €1,200 to €6,000 per year, depending on the program area, university, location, format, and language of instruction.
Should you decide to pursue your studies, you need to be fully aware of the applicable fees and the process of getting a visa. This simple guide covers the key steps to know about getting a student visa for Ukraine.
Steps on Applying for a Ukrainian Student Visa
Step 1. Obtain an Invitation to Study or Invitation Letter from a Ukrainian Institution
Whether you need a Ukrainian student visa or are entering Ukraine visa-free, you should obtain an official Invitation for Study to verify the purpose of your visit. To get an Invitation for Study, you first need to create a digital applicant account through the official Study in Ukraine system, submit an application, receive an Admission Offer, accept it, and provide the required documents. Once the university approves your application, it will issue your official digital Invitation for Study.
The official Study in Ukraine system charges an application fee of 3,100 UAH, and applicants may submit up to 20 applications through the system. The digital Invitation for Study is valid for six months and is automatically shared through the national system with Ukrainian embassies and consulates, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, and other relevant authorities.
Once you have the Invitation for Study, submit it with your other visa documents if you need a Type D student visa. You should also keep a copy for border control when entering Ukraine.
Step 2. Check the Type of Visa You Need
Depending on the purpose and length of stay, Ukraine issues short-term visas and long-term visas. A short-term visa, or Type C visa, is for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. A long-term visa, or Type D visa, is for foreign citizens who intend to stay in Ukraine for more than 90 days and later obtain a document allowing temporary stay or residence. If you need a visa to study in Ukraine for a degree program, you must apply for a Type D student visa at a Ukrainian embassy or consulate in your country. Step 3. Apply for a Visa via Three Options
For a long-term student visa, you should first register and complete your visa application through visa.mfa.gov.ua. During the online application process, you will choose where to submit your documents: a Ukrainian embassy or consulate, or, where available, a Ukraine Visa Application Center. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently lists 71 Visa Application Centers in 48 location countries. Visa applications can generally be submitted no earlier than three months before the intended date of entry into Ukraine.
Ukraine also has a separate e-Visa system for eligible nationals and eligible purposes, including some educational visits. However, an e-Visa is not the standard route for a long-term student visa. If you are coming to Ukraine for a full degree or a stay longer than 90 days and your nationality requires a visa, follow the Type D student visa process through the embassy, consulate, or Visa Application Center.
If you are eligible for an e-Visa for a short educational visit, you can apply through evisa.mfa.gov.ua, create an account, complete the application form, upload the required documents, and check the status of your application online.
A single-entry e-Visa costs $20, and a double-entry e-Visa costs $30. Urgent e-Visa processing costs double the regular e-Visa fee. Non-urgent e-Visa applications are processed within three working days, while urgent e-Visa applications are processed within one working day.
Step 4. Register Your Visa Application and Bring Your Visa Application and Supporting Documents to Your Interview Day
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires visa applicants to register and complete the visa application form at visa.mfa.gov.ua. After registering, print and sign the form and bring it with your supporting documents to the embassy, consulate, or Visa Application Center, following the instructions for your country.
You may be asked to provide proof that you have sufficient funds to cover your stay, return travel, and study-related expenses. Accepted proof may include recent bank statements, cash in Ukrainian hryvnia or another convertible currency, a valid bank card, a scholarship statement, or proof of financial support from a sponsor. Some supporting documents vary by country and by consular office.
Depending on your country and the visa office handling your application, you may also be asked to provide additional documents, such as a medical certificate. Any documents issued by foreign authorities must be officially legalized and submitted with a certified translation into Ukrainian or, where Ukrainian is not available, English. Check the embassy, consulate, or Visa Application Center checklist for your country before submitting your application.
Step 5. Wait for the Visa
After submitting your Ukraine student visa application, wait for the decision. Ukrainian embassies and consulates abroad process visa applications in up to five working days for expedited service and up to 10 working days for regular service, excluding the day of application. Processing can take longer, up to 30 working days, if additional checks or supporting documents are required.

All international students should obtain an official Invitation for Study from a Ukrainian educational institution.
