The Journey

I am Zorica Stamenkovska from North Macedonia, and I am currently a graduate student at Towson University. I received my Fulbright scholarship for 2024-2025.

Fulbright Scholarship Details

When I initially decided to pursue further education in the U.S., I had a few universities in mind. However, Fulbright was the only scholarship I applied for, as I wanted to dedicate all my energy to a program that resonated with my goals. The Fulbright process is multifaceted: the Institute of International Education (IIE) looks at a range of factors and ultimately decides on placements. After a thorough review, I was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and placed at Towson University. The scholarship covers my tuition and living expenses, enabling me to focus on my studies and community engagement.

Being placed at Towson University has been an incredible experience. The campus life, the friendships I’ve made, the volunteer opportunities, these have all helped me grow academically and personally. If there’s one key lesson I’ve taken away from the process, it’s that embracing the journey complete with unexpected turns can lead you to exactly where you need to be.

Educational Background

My undergraduate degree is in Marketing, which might seem like a detour when you see that I’m now pursuing my Master's in Communications and Advocacy. However, marketing gave me a solid grounding in consumer insights, message development, and strategic thinking. Those same skills are vital in advocacy work, whether it’s managing campaigns, mobilizing communities, or shaping public policy.

Although academic performance and GPA do matter, I’m convinced that the combination of soft skills, adaptability, and real-world experience sets a candidate apart. Even though it can be difficult for me to speak about myself, meeting other Fulbright students made me realize that a person’s well-roundedness, along with curiosity and innovative thnking truly sets them apart.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for Towson University?

Before my application, I took time to reflect on my values and how they tied into my career aspirations. It helped me decide which programs truly resonated with my goals. In this process, research was crucial. I spent a few days exploring what Fulbright could offer me regarding cultural exchange, academic support, and networking opportunities. Fulbright is highly competitive, so you should apply only if you understand what it might bring you and how it fits your personal mission. When your values line up with the program’s objectives, it makes the whole experience much more meaningful and rewarding. This is what I had in mind back then, and it is also a piece of advice I’d like to share with others.

For standardized tests, I took the TOEFL and the GRE. While I did some light prep for the TOEFL, the GRE was more demanding. My only advice is to start early, well before you even know your final Fulbright status. The GRE tests both your endurance and analytical skills, so consistent practice is key.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?

The Fulbright application is extensive, and it can feel overwhelming at first. To stay on track, I broke the application into manageable sections and set personal deadlines. I’m also a big believer in finishing early: I submitted at least five days before the final due date. You never know what might happen at the last minute—technical issues, personal emergencies—so giving myself a buffer reduced stress.

In the final stages, I revised my essays and statements with fresh mind and eyes. I took a break, then read through them again from a reviewer’s perspective. It’s easy to overlook small mistakes or inconsistencies when you’ve been staring at the same words for days. Most importantly, I made sure my authentic voice shone through. In my view, Fulbright looks for candidates who share a compelling, genuine story about their future aspirations and the impact they intend to have both in the U.S. and upon returning home.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe it was my diverse professional background and demonstrated commitment to social impact. Working in government, nonprofit, education, and private sectors showed adaptability and a willingness to learn from different environments. My volunteer roles further illustrated that I’m not just here to learn. I’m here to give back to the community and bring these experiences home with me.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Are Going Through the Process Again?

If I could rewind the process, I’d start my test prep even earlier—particularly for the GRE. Knowing what I know now, I’d also reach out to more current and former Fulbrighters for insights and moral support. Finally, I’d remind myself not to stress excessively about the “perfect” university match. It turns out that even if you don’t get placed at your initial top choice, you can end up thriving exactly where you land.

What Advice Would You Give for Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Believe in Yourself: Recognize your unique strengths and share them with confidence.

Be Authentic: Personal values and experiences are the heart of a standout application. Fulbright wants to see the real you.

Think Beyond Yourself: Fulbright is about cultural exchange. Show what you will bring to the U.S. and how you plan to give back to your home country.

Plan Ahead: Develop a schedule for your application materials, set early deadlines, and revise carefully.

Balance Modesty and Confidence: Don’t shy away from highlighting your achievements, but stay genuine in your presentation.

I hope my story inspires future Fulbright applicants to be bold, thorough, and true to themselves. This scholarship is a chance to learn not just from books and classrooms, but from the vibrant cultures and experiences waiting for you on the other side.
