My name is Zainab Bukola Winjobi-Arikewuyo. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Religion (Islamic Studies) from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, where I graduated with a Second Class Upper Division in 2015. I later completed my Master’s degree in Islamic Studies at the University of Ibadan, graduating with a PhD-grade result in 2021.

I decided to pursue my doctorate in the United States because research and teaching in the study of religion have always been my passion. I believe that earning a degree in the U.S. provides the kind of international exposure that is essential for my academic growth. Studying in a global academic space allows me to better understand people’s cultures, traditions, and religious experiences across different societies, which is central to both my research and my teaching goals

Graduate Teaching Assistantship Details

I am currently funded at Florida State University through a scholarship that covers my full tuition and includes a Graduate Teaching Assistantship. This support has allowed me to focus fully on my academic training, teaching responsibilities, and research development.

In addition to my primary funding, I have received several competitive research and travel awards during my studies. These include the Mahmoud Taha Travel Award from the African Studies Association, funding from the Florida State University Native American and Indigenous Studies Center, and the Leo Sandon Endowment Award. These scholarships have supported my conference participation and research activities and have played an important role in advancing my academic work.

Yes, I was also offered other scholarships. I received a scholarship offer from Hartford International University for Religion and Peace for a Master’s program in International Peacebuilding, as well as a funded PhD offer in Historical Studies from Southern Illinois University. Although I did not accept these offers, they reflect the availability of funded opportunities at these institutions and may be helpful for prospective scholars exploring similar academic paths.

Educational Background

My educational background prepared me for my chosen field by giving me a strong foundation in Islamic thought, religious history, and critical analysis of texts and lived religious practices. Through my earlier training, I developed skills in academic research, writing, and interpretation, as well as the ability to engage religion within its social, cultural, and historical contexts.

This preparation shaped my academic interests and equipped me with the methodological tools needed to pursue advanced study in religion, particularly in areas that require sensitivity to culture, tradition, and comparative perspectives. It also strengthened my commitment to teaching and research, as my training consistently emphasized clarity, rigor, and engagement with diverse viewpoints.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Florida State University?

I prepared my applications by gathering all required documents, including transcripts and academic records. I ensured my grades met U.S. requirements by converting my results from the 5- and 7-point grading systems through a WES evaluation, which confirmed that my GPA exceeded the minimum 3.0 requirement for most institutions. I also reached out to professors and graduate coordinators whose research aligned with mine to confirm program fit and availability.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I found information about institutions and scholarships primarily through online searches, especially university websites and Google. I completed the required English-language proficiency test and prepared by reviewing test formats and practicing consistently. To apply for scholarships, I carefully reviewed eligibility criteria, tailored my statements to each opportunity, and submitted complete applications supported by strong academic records.

My advice is to start early, research institutions and scholarships carefully, and make sure your academic goals clearly align with the program you are applying to.
