The Journey

My name is Yogita, and I am currently pursuing my Joint Master’s Degree under the Surface, Electro-, Radiation, and Photochemistry (SERP+) Erasmus Mundus Programme. As part of the program, I studied in multiple countries. I completed my first semester at Paris-Saclay University, where I focused on fundamental concepts in physical chemistry like kinetics, electrochemistry, and photochemistry along with important concepts from organic, inorganic, and surface chemistry with a basic understanding of biophysics.  For my second semester, I moved to Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland, where the emphasis shifted to photochemistry and dynamic chemical reactions in biology and systems and simulations in physical chemistry. In my third semester, I returned to Paris to delve into medical applications, nanomedicine, and renewable energy. Currently, I am preparing for my fourth-semester master’s thesis at Institut Galien Paris-Saclay, where I will work on synthesizing and assembling boron-containing polymers for cancer therapy.

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (Honours) at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, India. During my undergraduate studies, I undertook several research-based projects and internships, which gave me hands-on experience and insight into how real-world research is conducted. These experiences fueled my passion for pursuing a master’s degree in chemistry.

In my first year of undergrad, I conducted a literature review on perovskite-based photocatalysts. This was my first glimpse into the scientific research community. Later, I gained practical laboratory experience through various projects. At IIT Bombay, I worked on the total synthesis of dienes and regioselective hydroxy peroxidation catalyzed by tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI), focusing on sustainable chemical processes. I also worked on the green synthesis of Schiff bases and their metal complexes using fruit acids as catalysts and water as the solvent.

Academically, these projects prepared me for advanced research, while my time at St. Stephen’s College, which had students from diverse cultural backgrounds across India, taught me to appreciate different perspectives. This open-mindedness and adaptability were invaluable for the multi-country experience of my Erasmus Mundus program.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Institution?

During the final year of my undergraduate studies, I researched and applied to several master’s programs, including multiple Erasmus Mundus programs such as Chemical Innovation and Regulation (ChIR), Biopharmaceutical Chemistry (BIOPHAM), and Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, along with the SERP+ program. I also applied to IIT Gandhinagar for an MSc in Chemistry and received offers from all these programs.

I ultimately chose SERP+ because its curriculum aligned closely with my aspirations of applying chemistry in the medical field and renewable energy. It also offered the unique opportunity to gain global exposure through its multi-country structure and study at prestigious institutions like Paris-Saclay University.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships are highly competitive, and I believe my application stood out due to its alignment with the program’s objectives and my academic background. I focused on crafting a strong statement of purpose that highlighted my motivation, relevant experiences, and future aspirations. I also ensured that my CV and recommendation letters reflected my research accomplishments and academic strengths.

For prospective applicants, I recommend starting early—ideally in October—by thoroughly researching the Erasmus Mundus catalogue to find programs that fit your goals. Dedicate time to perfecting your statement of purpose, which is your chance to explain your motivation for choosing the program and how it aligns with your career goals.

Could You Briefly Discuss the Erasmus Mundus Program You Pursued and the Specific Field of Study It Focused On?

I pursued the Joint European Master’s Degree in Surface, Electro-, Radiation, and Photochemistry (SERP+), an interdisciplinary program that blends chemistry, physical chemistry, nanoscience, and materials science with applications in fields such as renewable energy, nanomedicine, catalysis, and radiation science. The program is structured to give students a strong theoretical foundation while also emphasizing practical applications and hands-on training.

The program also includes intensive complementary training, such as a winter school on data science, where I learned tools for data analysis and visualization, and a summer school on business, entrepreneurship, and science management. This blend of technical and soft skills ensured that we were prepared not just as researchers but also as professionals ready to tackle interdisciplinary challenges.

This program is ideal for students who are curious, adaptable, and interested in exploring chemistry's interdisciplinary applications. It suits individuals who want to combine academic learning with real-world applications, as the curriculum is designed to address contemporary challenges in fields like energy, healthcare, and materials science. Students who aim to make a significant impact in fields like renewable energy, nanomedicine, or advanced materials should consider this program. It equips you with the theoretical knowledge, technical expertise, and transferable skills needed to contribute meaningfully to solving global challenges in science and technology.

For anyone passionate about interdisciplinary research, hands-on applications, and an international academic journey, this program is an excellent choice.

How Did the Cost of Living Vary Across the Countries You Studied In? Which Country Was the Most Affordable or Expensive, and How Did You Manage Financially?

The cost of living varied significantly across the countries I studied in. Paris was the most expensive city, but student-friendly facilities such as dormitories, housing allowances, and transportation discounts helped manage expenses. In contrast, Poznan, Poland, was very affordable, with reasonably priced university accommodations.

Financially, the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship provided a generous monthly stipend and annual travel allowances, which were sufficient to cover my living and travel expenses comfortably across all the countries I lived in.

Did You Face Any Language Barriers, and if So, How Did You Overcome Them? Did the Language of Instruction Change From One Country to Another?

The language barrier can indeed be a challenge, but I chose to view it as an opportunity rather than a hurdle. Personally, I enjoy learning new languages, and my Erasmus Mundus program included courses on regional languages as part of the curriculum, which helped immensely.

In France, most people spoke primarily French, with English being more common among university students. Similarly, in Poland, English was mainly spoken by students at the university, while locals generally used Polish. Despite this, I found the experience enriching. The language courses, combined with interactions with local people, allowed me to not only improve my language skills but also gain a deeper understanding of the culture and traditions of each region.

Thankfully, all my classes and lectures were conducted in English, so there were no academic difficulties due to language barriers. It was a valuable experience that enhanced my adaptability, cultural awareness, and appreciation for the diversity that comes with living in different countries.
