The Journey
My name is Vipul Garg, and I am originally from India. I am currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU). I chose to pursue further education in this field because of my deep interest in nano-neuro interactions. My research specifically focuses on how nanoparticles bind with different 2D and 3D neural models to advance targeted neuromodulation and neural stimulation.

Educational Background
I graduated in 2023 from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi with a B.Tech in Textile and Fibre Engineering. During my time there, I was honored with the BOSS research award for the best research project. My undergraduate GPA was 8.6/10.0. My background at IIT Delhi was instrumental in preparing me for my current work, as it provided a strong foundation in materials characterization and engineering principles, which I now apply to complex biological systems.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Washington University in St. Louis?
My preparation involved identifying faculty members whose research aligned with my interests in nanotechnology and materials science. I also used QS rankings to select good institutions in my field. I focused heavily on building a research portfolio, which included my award-winning project at IIT Delhi, and reaching out to potential advisors at WashU to discuss collaboration possibilities.
How Did You Find Information About McDonnell International Scholars Academy Fellowship and Washington University in St. Louis?
I attended an outreach seminar of McDonnell Academy held at IIT Delhi, as it's a partner university to WashU.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests?
Yes, I took the GRE and the TOEFL. I prepared for the GRE by focusing on quantitative reasoning and vocabulary through instructing myself through YouTube videos and standard preparation material like Magoosh/Manhattan 1lb book, and practiced English speaking and writing daily to ensure a high score on the language proficiency exam.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the McDonnell International Scholars Academy Fellowship?
Applying for the McDonnell Fellowship required more than just academic excellence; it required demonstrating leadership potential and a commitment to global citizenship. I prepared by reflecting on my social experiences, learnings at IIT Delhi, and how I could contribute to a global community of scholars. Detailed instructions are mentioned on the WashU’s McDonnell Academy website about the eligibility, deadline, and requirements for this fellowship.

How Do You Rate Washington University in St. Louis Academically and Why?
I rate WashU 8/10 academically. The access to cutting-edge facilities, such as the proteomics cores and advanced imaging centers required for my research, is unparalleled. Many faculty are not only leaders in their fields but are also deeply committed to mentoring PhD students.
How Does Washington University in St. Louis Support International Students?
WashU and the McDonnell Academy provide extensive support, ranging from orientation and visa assistance to social events and professional leadership training. The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) is very proactive in ensuring we are integrated into the St. Louis community.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe it was the combination of my strong research foundation and my clear vision for how I wanted to use education and skills for solving global challenges that provided me with the edge. I also conversed with the existing scholars about the application process, which helped me a lot to understand the technicalities of the requirements.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
- It might sound amusing, but dealing with different time zones for attending online interviews for the first time can be confusing. In one of my online meetings with a senior PhD student, I messed with CST, EST, and PST time zones and missed the meeting. Thanksfully the student agreed to schedule another meeting, but it would have been a blunder if it had happened in an interview.
- Additionally, it is a good idea to check the logistics of an interview, such as checking if your device can run Zoom properly, if your voice is loud enough, and most importantly, in case you encounter a problem during the meeting, inform the concerned person asap without delaying to help understanding the situation.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Focus on your "story." Don't just list your achievements; explain the why behind your research. For the McDonnell Fellowship, specifically for the interview, it is good practice to recall your experiences, learnings till now, and how they have shaped your personality. Thinking critically of some expected questions which might be asked in an interview (can ask senior McDonnell students), like why do you want to join, what would you bring, and how you plan to contribute to the global community, would enhance your interview experience a lot.
