The Journey
Hi, I’m Ushna from Lahore, Pakistan. I’m currently pursuing a Master’s in International Educational Development at Teachers College, Columbia University, as a Fulbright Scholar. Prior to this, I spent three years working in Pakistan’s public education sector, gaining hands-on experience with the system through my work at Teach For Pakistan, the Federal Ministry of Education, and UNDP Pakistan, where I contributed to initiatives aimed at transforming it into a more equitable and inclusive one.
Fulbright Scholarship Details
I am honored to have been awarded the Fulbright Scholarship, an exchange program funded by the U.S. Department of State. Through Fulbright, I am pursuing a Master’s in International Educational Development at Teachers College, Columbia University. The scholarship provides full funding, including tuition, living expenses, health insurance, and travel. In addition to that, I also received a $44,000 scholarship from Teachers College.
Educational Background
I earned my undergraduate degree in Economics and Political Science from the Lahore School of Economics, graduating with a CGPA of 3.92. The interdisciplinary coursework gave me a strong academic foundation in policy, governance, and socioeconomic analysis - skills that became essential as I transitioned into the education sector upon graduation. This academic background laid the groundwork for the professional experiences that followed, allowing me to build concrete, practice-based preparedness for my current field. My work in the education sector following my undergraduate studies strengthened my passion for transforming education systems and paved the way for my specialization in education sector development.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?
The Fulbright application centers around two key essays: the Study Objectives and the Personal Statement, both of which require strategic preparation and deep self-reflection. It’s essential to have clarity on what you want to study, why it matters, and how it aligns with your long-term goals.
The Study Objectives should present a focused plan for what you hope to accomplish during your program and how that experience will equip you to contribute meaningfully to your field and your home community upon your return. The Personal Statement, on the other hand, should tell the story of who you are, highlighting the experiences, values, and motivations that have shaped your commitment to the work you've outlined. The two essays should complement each other, offering a coherent and compelling picture of both your professional aspirations and personal journey.
The application process is demanding and often involves multiple drafts, careful revision, and honest feedback. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support - whether from mentors, peers, or past Fulbright recipients. It truly takes a village, and those who’ve been through the process are often happy to help.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Columbia University?
When applying for the Fulbright, you will be asked to list your preferred universities and degree programs. While the Fulbright placement team ultimately selects the final institution, they are committed to selecting a university that is offering a program that aligns
That’s why it’s crucial to do your own research during the application process. Focus on identifying specific programs - not just universities - that directly support your Study Objectives. Instead of choosing well-known schools with strong general reputations, prioritize those offering a program with curricula, faculty expertise, and opportunities that match your proposed area of study.
The more clearly the alignment between your objectives and the programs you’ve chosen is, the better the chances that you’ll be placed at one of your top-choice institutions. Strong alignment not only strengthens your pitch for your preferred program, but it also sets you up for a more meaningful academic experience in the U.S.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
A strong application begins with genuine passion for the field of study. It's important to apply for something you truly care about, something you can realistically see yourself dedicating your life to. When your interest is authentic, it shines through the essays and overall narrative!
That being said, passion must be paired with time and commitment to the process to refine it to its full potential. A strong application is the result of careful planning, multiple drafts, and thoughtful refinement. Give your essays the time they deserve, and seek honest feedback from mentors or peers to ensure your ideas are coming through clearly.
In the end, it’s the culmination of effort, authenticity, clarity of purpose, and attention to detail that makes an application truly stand out!
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Start sooner, and be kind to yourself! The Fulbright application is a long and often stressful process that demands time, reflection, and revision. Many applicants underestimate how much effort it takes until they’re caught in last-minute edits. I gave my application 2–3 weeks, but still found myself scrambling to finalize everything. I consider myself lucky to have met the deadline with all I had to offer, but I carried a lot of doubt until the day I received the acceptance.
Starting earlier would’ve made the process less overwhelming and more intentional. It’s always better to get things done ahead of time - you’ll reduce unnecessary stress and give yourself space to think clearly. The Fulbright application is long and emotionally demanding, and it gives you plenty of time to overthink. The earlier you begin, the more room you give yourself to reflect, refine, and feel confident in what you submit.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Start the process with a clear head and a focused vision for what you want to study. Do your research, and make sure your passion and work shine through your application narrative. Leave no room for self-doubt - believe in the value of your story and the impact you hope to make.
The application process can be challenging, but remember: you’re not alone. Many people have gone through the same journey and are often more than willing to support you. Don’t hesitate to reach out, ask questions, and seek feedback. Community can make all the difference!
