My name is Tarikawit Fikadu, and I am from Ethiopia. I had earned an LL.B degree from Wollo University some years ago. Following my graduation, I spent around 8 years working in the corporate sector, including positions at a law firm, a public enterprise, and a consultancy. Throughout this period, my work mainly focused on supporting investors and organizations by helping them navigate legal matters and regulatory frameworks.

Over time, while I valued the experience and skills I gained, I began to reflect more deeply on the nature of my work and its impact. I came to realize that I wanted a stronger, more direct connection with communities and to contribute in a way that addressed their everyday challenges. This sense of meaningful engagement was something I felt had been missing in the corporate roles I had held at that time.

Guided by this realization, I explored opportunities that would allow me to better understand my country’s context and work more effectively at the community level. It is also worth noting that I had never traveled outside Ethiopia before, not even to neighboring countries, so deciding to pursue studies abroad was a significant first experience for me, one that I embraced with the intention of broadening my perspective and understanding beyond my immediate environment. As a result, I chose to pursue further studies in Constitutional Law and Human Rights, believing that this path would equip me with the knowledge and perspective needed to support communities more directly and advocate for justice and fundamental rights.

My educational background began with an LL.B degree from Wollo University, Ethiopia. I learned about the SI Scholarship through a friend with whom I had studied during my undergraduate years. She had been awarded the scholarship and was pursuing her studies in Sweden. Although her academic background was in the natural sciences and mine was in the social sciences, her achievement inspired me to apply and explore the opportunity for myself.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

As I prepared my application, I was able to meet the language requirement without additional testing, since the medium of instruction in higher education in Ethiopia is English, which was clearly stated in my LL.B degree, which fulfilled the language requirement for the scholarship application.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals?

When I first started my application, I went straight to the SI Scholarship website to understand what it really takes to be selected. I also signed up to receive guidance from a former scholar, and I received around ten emails with practical tips and insights. Those messages really helped me see the process more clearly and approach my application in a more structured way.

At the same time, I wasn’t doing it alone. My friends and colleagues at the law firm where I was working, many of whom had already studied abroad, were incredibly supportive. They kept reminding me to stay focused, especially when my workload made me lose track or feel overwhelmed. They also shared useful advice on how to write a strong motivation letter, which made a big difference.

Honestly, there were moments when I would get stuck on just one paragraph and not know how to move forward. In those situations, I found it helpful to take a break and come back with a fresh mind. I also made sure to carefully review the specific requirements of each institution and learn from alumni experiences. Looking back, the whole process was not just about individual effort; it was really shaped by the support I received and the small strategies I learned along the way.

How is Your Experience at Umeå University?

My experience at the institution was truly exceptional. The professors had a remarkable ability to take complex concepts and present them in a clear and accessible way, which made learning both engaging and effective. What stood out most was their passion, something that was evident in every lecture and discussion. They were also very approachable and easy to communicate with, always available and willing to support students whenever help was needed.

The curriculum was thoughtfully designed, with a well-structured syllabus that supported steady learning throughout the program. The library was another highlight, offering a wide range of resources as well as study spaces that suited different needs and moods. In addition, the café and common areas provided a welcoming environment where students could take a break, recharge, and connect with others.

All of these elements created a supportive and enriching academic environment, which was especially meaningful during the long winter months and the challenges of the COVID period. They not only enhanced my learning experience but also helped me stay motivated and focused throughout my studies.

What Did You Pursue After the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals?

After my graduation, I intended to work in the field of human rights. With this goal in mind, I returned to my country and joined a local civil society organization. In a relatively short period after my return, I have been actively involved in human rights work, and I am currently serving as the A. Executive Director of a well-known local human rights civil society organization. In this role, I have taken on responsibilities related to leadership, program coordination, and advancing initiatives that support the promotion of human rights and human rights defenders.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

What I believe made my application stand out was the clarity of my personal journey and how I was able to thoughtfully connect my work experience to the master’s program I intended to pursue. Although my professional experience did not directly align with the program at first glance, I carefully framed and aligned it in a way that demonstrated how the skills and insights I gained were still relevant and transferable to the field of my choice in the Master Programme.

Moreover, I clearly articulated my motivation for applying and my plans after graduation. I showed how the program fit into my long-term goal of working in human rights and contributing to civic space in my country. This ability to present a coherent narrative between my background, my current direction, and my future aspirations helped make my application more compelling.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

To be honest, I would not have done much differently. Throughout the process, I sought help whenever I needed it, and at times, my friends also supported me even without being asked. Their guidance, along with my own efforts, helped me navigate the application effectively.

If I were to mention one thing I would improve, it would be starting the process earlier. I faced internet interruptions at the time and had to stay up late, even close to midnight, to complete and submit my application. Starting earlier would have reduced the pressure and provided a significant advantage in managing time, dealing with unexpected challenges, and submitting a stronger application.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Be focused and take the time to read all requirements in detail; don’t rush. Don’t hesitate to ask for help; there is no shame in reaching out, especially to alumni from the same or even different scholarship programs, as their experiences can provide valuable guidance. It is also important to start early, as the process can sometimes feel overwhelming, and without enough time, you might lose momentum or even feel tempted to quit.

Having a strong support system, whether friends, family, or colleagues, can make a big difference. These are the people who can hold you accountable, check in on your progress, and encourage you when you feel stuck or behind. Their support can help you stay consistent throughout the application process.

Above all, be clear about your passion and the reasons behind your choice of program. Understanding why you want to pursue a particular field will not only make it easier to write a compelling motivation letter but will also help you choose the program that truly fits your goals. Avoid selecting a program based on superficial factors such as the popularity of a city or the number of students; instead, make your decision based on what you genuinely want to study and where your interests lie.
