The Journey
My name is Tan Xuan Yin, and I am an international student currently studying Architecture at Semyung University in South Korea. I come from Malaysia, and I chose to pursue architecture because I am deeply interested in how spaces influence human behavior and society. My academic focus has been on design, spatial thinking, and exploring the relationship between architecture and community. I decided to continue my studies in this field to develop both my creative and technical skills while gaining global exposure.
Global Korea Scholarship Details
I received a scholarship from GKS (Global Korea Scholarship). The scholarship provided full financial support toward tuition fees from the language school year to the final year of my bachelor's studies (approximately 4,000,000krw per semester). It covers tuition fees, living expenses, and provides additional support for international students to study in Korea.
Educational Background
My educational background is based on the Malaysian system. I completed SPM with 10As, and at the time I received the scholarship, I was enrolled in STPM (Semester 2). My academic journey helped me build discipline, adaptability, and strong foundational knowledge, which prepared me for studying abroad.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Semyung University?
How Did You Find Information About the Global Korea Scholarship and Semyung University?
I found out about the scholarship through my friend’s sister. From there, I researched more on my own and decided to apply.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I did not take any standardized tests. I focused on preparing my application based on my academic records and personal statements.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Global Korea Scholarship?
This was my third time applying for the scholarship, so I learned a lot from my previous attempts. I prepared my application mostly by myself and later found a coach to review and improve my essays. This helped me present my story more clearly and effectively.
How is Your Experience at Semyung University?
My experience has been challenging but meaningful. I have gained both academic knowledge and personal growth through my studies.
How Do You Rate Semyung University Academically?
The university provides many opportunities for students. They are supportive of student initiatives and give chances to participate in various activities, including leadership roles. Academically, I was able to achieve certifications and gain practical experience.
How Does Semyung University Support International Students?
Support for international students is somewhat limited. Many opportunities are available, but students often need to actively look for them on their own. The international office is not very proactive, so being independent is important.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?
All of my classes are conducted fully in Korean, including lectures, presentations, exams, and quizzes.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing Korean?
Yes, it can be very difficult without knowing Korean. Since everything is conducted in Korean, students need to put in extra effort to keep up academically.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my persistence played a big role, as this was my third attempt. I also made an effort to improve my essays and clearly express my motivation and goals.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I could go through the process again, I would prepare earlier and improve my Korean language skills before starting university.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Do not give up if you are not successful the first time. Keep improving your application, especially your essays, and seek feedback if possible. Also, be prepared to adapt to a new environment and language.
