The Journey

My name is Talha Mumtaz, and I am originally from Lahore, Pakistan. I completed my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemistry at Government College University Lahore (GCU). Currently, I am a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Candidate in Chemistry at Yıldız Technical University in Istanbul, Türkiye. My research focuses on the synthesis of sustainable polymers.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks Scholarship Details

The title of my project is ESPERANTO (Enhancing the Sustainability of Photopolymers and photoinduced processes). This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2021 programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DN) grant agreement No. 101073432.

Educational Background

Chemistry is undoubtedly a fascinating field, but it is also quite challenging. What truly motivated me to pursue a career in chemistry is the realization that almost everything around us has some form of “chemistry” associated with it. While maintaining a strong GPA can certainly open doors to good opportunities, it is not the only factor that determines success. Communication skills and the ability to effectively convey knowledge are equally important. I believe that Government College University Lahore provided an excellent academic environment that helped prepare me for larger professional and academic opportunities.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Yıldız Technical University?

I believe it is important to surround yourself with people who are motivated to grow and improve. In today’s age, access to information is not really a problem. What truly matters is how much information you seek, how relevant it is to your goals, and how you use it to stay motivated. When you have clear interests and the right environment, you are naturally encouraged to pursue opportunities that genuinely excite you.

I took the IELTS as a standardized test to demonstrate my English proficiency. I mainly prepared for the exam using resources available on YouTube. As I mentioned earlier, I was also fortunate to receive support and guidance from some very helpful people during my preparation.

Well, to be very honest, it takes time. In my case, I started preparing during my Master’s studies. It is important to carefully review the requirements and terms and conditions of the application process. Therefore, starting early can be very beneficial.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe the motivation you express in your letter plays a key role in making you stand out. It is important to carefully work on your motivation letter and clearly convey what you truly mean. In other words, you should honestly express your goals, interests, and reasons for applying.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would likely approach it in the same way as before, as the strategy I followed previously proved to be effective.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice to those who are looking for a similar scholarship is to believe in yourself and, most importantly, do what you truly love. When you are passionate about what you do, things gradually start to fall into place, and opportunities begin to appear. In the end, you will see how everything comes together, and the real magic happens before your eyes 😊
