The Journey

My name is Syed Shaharyar Ahmed. I am from Lahore, Pakistan. I am a lawyer by profession, and I did my Bachelor's in Law (LLB Hons.) from the University of the Punjab. I started working as a legal associate alongside my studies at Ibrar Law Associates. Furthermore, during my studies, I started writing research publications, doing remote legal internships with international law firms such as Hogan Lovells, Clifford Chance, and  White & Case. Next to that, I did specialization courses in International Law, European Law, Business Law, and ADR methods from various online platforms, including Coursera and the United States Institute of Peace. My interest in the field of International Technology Law started to develop as soon as I stumbled upon clients from the EU region who sought my expertise in matters specific to the technology law regime. While being unaware of this uncharted domain, I started to explore it further, and that’s when I decided to pursue a master's degree in this particular domain.

Vrije Universiteit Fellowship Programme & Holland Scholarship Details

I received two (02) combined scholarships in the form of Vrije Universiteit Fellowship Programme (VUFP), which was awarded by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, + Netherlands/Holland Scholarship (NLS), which was awarded by the Dutch Government. The VUFP scholarship was a 100% tuition fee waiver, while the NLS scholarship was a 5000 Euros one-off stipend awarded as a relocation allowance. This scholarship is highly competitive, and only one or two are available per department. Share the details about the scholarship you received, including the institution name, scholarship name, and the amount.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

Yes, other than these scholarships, I was awarded the Warwick GREAT UK Scholarship from the University of Warwick which was a 15000 Pounds waiver (70% tuition-fee waiver), the Nottingham Excellence Scholarship (50% Tuition Fee Waiver) from the Nottingham Trent University, as well as the CEU Excellence Scholarship from the Central European University, Austria, which was a 50% tuition fee waiver.

Educational Background

Alright, so I did my bachelor’s in law, which was a 5-year programme (LLB Hons.) I secured a CGPA of 3.97 out of 4.0.  I think my high grades and research publications helped me in securing scholarships and pursuing the field of technology law.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Institutions?

How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and Institutions?

I researched extensively through university websites, official scholarship portals, student forums, LinkedIn, and by connecting with alumni from different institutions. I compared curriculum structures, faculty expertise, scholarship types, and career outcomes before selecting my target schools.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I took the IELTS Academic test since it is mostly required while applying abroad. I prepared by myself for a week and was able to secure 8 BANDS overall.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Scholarship?

My approach was strategic and research-driven. I aligned my application materials with the vision, aims, and objectives of the master's programme I was targeting. I showcased a clear link between my past academic experience, professional exposure, and future career goals. I ensured my motivation letter highlighted not only my achievements but also my commitment to contributing meaningfully to the field of international technology law. Additionally, I emphasized my internships, publications, and certifications to create a strong evidence-based narrative.

How is (was) Your Experience at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam?

My experience has been enriching academically and professionally. VU Amsterdam offers an excellent environment for critical thinking and encourages engagement with cutting-edge discussions in technology law and policy.

How Do You Rate Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Academically and Why?

Academically, I would rate the institution very highly. The faculty is exceptionally knowledgeable, courses are well-structured, and there is a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, something that is crucial for technology law.

How Does Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Support International Students?

International students receive considerable support, including orientation programmes, visa guidance, career counselling, and dedicated academic advisors. There is also strong peer support through associations and student communities.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Dutch?

Yes, all classes in my programme are conducted entirely in English. The country’s native language is Dutch; however, most of the people here speak English. Furthermore, the Netherlands is one of the very few countries in Europe with an English Literacy level of more than 90%.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing Dutch?

Not at all. Academic life and everyday interactions on campus can easily be managed in English. Although learning basic Dutch can be helpful for social and cultural integration, it is not a barrier academically.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe several elements strengthened my application:

My strong academic record (3.97 CGPA)

A substantial portfolio of research publications and internships with international law firms

A clearly articulated motivation letter aligning perfectly with the programme’s goals

Demonstrated commitment to technology law, supported by certifications and real client work

A consistent record of excellence and proactive engagement

All of these factors combined to form a compelling, well-rounded application.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would start preparing earlier, especially in terms of shortlisting programmes and understanding each scholarship’s values and priorities. Early preparation reduces stress and gives more time to refine personal statements and gather strong recommendation letters.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early; scholarships require thoughtful planning. Research deeply into the programme and tailor your motivation letter accordingly. Show evidence of your passion, certifications, internships, research, and volunteer work. Highlight impact and future goals, not just achievements. Stay consistent in your academic and professional journey. Apply widely; you never know which opportunity will work out. And most importantly: believe in your profile, even if you feel others are more competitive. Consistency and clarity go a long way.
