The Journey

My name is Surabhi Prasad, and I’m from India. I’m currently studying the Korean language program at Kyungsung University, Busan, and will begin my Master’s in Photography this September. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Communication from NIFT Mumbai, one of India’s top institutes. My passion for photography and visual storytelling, especially influenced by Korea’s creative scene, inspired me to pursue further education in this field.

Global Korea Scholarship Details

I received the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) offered by the Korean government (NIIED). It fully covers my tuition, living expenses, language training, airfare, and medical insurance. The scholarship supports 3 years of study: 1 year of language training + 2 years of a master's program.

Educational Background

I graduated from NIFT Mumbai with a Bachelor’s in Fashion Communication. My GPA was around 8.4/10. During my course, I studied graphic design, photography, styling, and visual storytelling, which laid a strong foundation for my interest in photography. I also gained practical experience through internships and freelance projects.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Kyungsung University?

I researched Korean universities offering photography with a strong practical focus. I shortlisted Kyungsung University because of its curriculum, faculty, and location in Busan. I then tailored my portfolio, personal statement, and study plan based on the university’s strengths and what they look for in applicants.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Global Korea Scholarship?

I carefully followed the GKS guidelines, researched successful applications online, and created a detailed personal statement and study plan that reflected my passion and long-term goals. I also made sure my documents were organized, proofread, and submitted before deadlines through the university track.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?

All classes for my master’s program will be conducted in Korean.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Korean?

Yes, students will face challenges if they don’t know Korean, especially for technical or theoretical subjects. However, the 1-year language training provided by GKS helps build a strong foundation. Also, practicing Korean outside the classroom is very helpful.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe it was my clear creative vision, strong portfolio, and genuine passion for Korean culture and photography. My efforts to connect Indian and Korean aesthetics and my past work experience in creative roles also helped show my commitment and readiness.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would have started preparing earlier, especially by learning Korean before applying. Also, I would’ve focused more on refining my portfolio visuals and reaching out to current or past GKS scholars for firsthand advice.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early and stay organized, Be honest and personal in your essays, Show your long-term goals clearly, Build a strong portfolio (if applying in creative fields), Learn basic Korean before applying—it really helps, and lastly, Don’t underestimate your story; show how your background connects to your goals.
