The Journey

My name is Suparit Suwanik, and I am originally from Bangkok, Thailand. I am currently a first-year PhD student in the Consumer Behavior and Family Economics Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a proud Fulbright scholar. My academic focus centers on investigating the linkages between financial behavior and socioeconomic mobility, particularly within the context of developing economies. I am especially interested in examining how informal credit systems, household financial decision-making, and targeted policy interventions can mitigate economic inequalities and promote sustainable development. Through my PhD, I aim to contribute to the field of development economics by generating evidence-based insights that enhance financial inclusion, strengthen household resilience, and support long-term economic advancement for underserved communities.

Fulbright Scholarship Details

I was honored to receive the prestigious Fulbright Thai Graduate Scholarship, awarded to only seven recipients annually from a highly competitive pool of approximately 200 applicants. This scholarship supports both PhD and Master’s level students, with a limited number of PhD recipients. In my case, the Fulbright Program provides me a stipend for living expenses, which, when combined with the fully-funded support from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, ensures that I can dedicate myself to my academic and research pursuits. Beyond financial assistance, Fulbright has profoundly enriched my journey through cultural exchange programs, professional development opportunities, and access to an extensive global network of scholars and alumni.

Educational Background

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Finance with first-class honors from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. I then completed a Master’s degree in Public Administration at Thammasat University, Thailand. Following that, I pursued a fully funded Master’s Degree in Applied Economics at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor through the prestigious Bank of Thailand scholarship. This comprehensive academic journey has equipped me with strong analytical and research skills, which have been invaluable in preparing me for a program focused on economics and its practical applications.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for Wisconsin-Madison?

My application journey was a result of extensive research, meticulous planning, and significant effort, all while balancing the demands of a full-time job. After being a Fulbrighter, I carefully identified institutions offering programs that aligned closely with my academic interests and long-term career goals. This targeted approach allowed me to focus on programs emphasizing household finance and financial inclusion, areas that resonate deeply with my passion for enhancing economic opportunities for underserved populations.

To strengthen my application, I dedicated considerable time to crafting a compelling statement of purpose and an academic CV. These documents were designed to highlight my research interests, academic achievements, and relevant experiences. I sought constructive feedback from trusted mentors and tailored my materials to reflect the unique strengths I could bring to each program.

For standardized tests, I rigorously prepared for the TOEFL and GRE over several months, employing practice tests and study guides to build a strong foundation. My preparation focused on quantitative reasoning and analytical writing, ensuring that I achieved competitive scores to bolster my application.

Last but not least, I sought recommendation letters from supervisors at work who were well-acquainted with my abilities and work ethic, as well as professors with whom I had worked closely or whose courses I excelled in, often earning top grades. Their genuine understanding of my skills and potential added authenticity and credibility to my application.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?

Applying for the Fulbright Scholarship required a deep understanding of its mission and values. I spent a considerable amount of time crafting a personal statement that emphasized how my background and aspirations aligned with Fulbright’s vision of fostering mutual understanding between nations. I also highlighted my commitment to contributing to Thailand’s development upon completing my degree.

The application process involved multiple steps, including a rigorous interview stage where only 20 candidates were selected from approximately 200 applicants. I prepared for the interview by anticipating questions about my academic background, research goals, and how I would serve as a cultural ambassador for Thailand.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because of the clarity in my research goals and my demonstrated commitment to using my education to address real-world challenges. My experience working on multiple research projects added practical value to my academic pursuits. Additionally, I emphasized my desire to bridge the gap between research and policy to benefit underserved communities in Thailand.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Are Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would start my preparations earlier, particularly for the standardized tests. Additionally, I would seek feedback on my application essays from a wider range of professors and peers to refine my narrative further.
