The Journey
My name is Sundas Tufail, and I am originally from Pakistan. I pursued an MSc in Environmental and Energy Engineering at the University of Sheffield. While working in the energy industry, I began to realize the growing importance of sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions. I wanted to be part of that change. I did not want to just observe where the world is heading but actively contribute to it. That passion is what led me to pursue further education in this field.
Commonwealth Scholarship Details
I was honored to receive the Commonwealth Scholarship for my master’s program. It fully covered my tuition fees, which were approximately GBP 50,000, and provided a monthly stipend of around GBP 4,000. This support made it possible for me to focus entirely on my studies and make the most of the experience without financial stress.
Educational Background
I completed my BSc in Mechanical Engineering, which gave me a strong technical foundation and analytical mindset. This background played a key role in helping me succeed in the Graduate Assessment Test (GAT) and confidently apply for both the program and the scholarship. It also helped me understand the technical aspects of energy systems, which I later built upon in my master’s.
How Did You Find Information About Commonwealth Scholarship and the University of Sheffield?
The British Council in Pakistan was my primary source of information. It provided clear, reliable guidance on available scholarships, application requirements, and timelines, which made the process much easier to navigate.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
Yes, I took the GAT. I prepared mainly by practicing past papers, which helped me understand the exam format and improve my performance significantly.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Commonwealth Scholarship?
One of the most valuable steps I took was reaching out to former Commonwealth scholars. Their guidance helped me understand what the selection committee looks for and how to present my story effectively. Learning from their experiences gave me both clarity and confidence.

It’s an environment that genuinely encourages learning, critical thinking, and growth. As part of my research project, I got to interact with lots of communities in Sheffield, which was learning beyond the classroom.
How Does the University of Sheffield Support International Students?
The university offers strong support systems for international students. The student council and various services are always available to help, whether it’s academic guidance or settling into a new environment. This support made a huge difference in my overall experience.

Every part of my application, especially my essays, reflected a clear vision of what I wanted to achieve and how this opportunity would help me get there. That alignment made my application more focused and impactful.

If I could go back, I would focus even more on building connections and expanding my network. The people you meet during this journey become just as valuable as the education itself.
