The Journey

My name is Sonia Pradhan, and I am an architect from India. Ever since my early years in architecture school, I have been passionate about creating sustainable, resilient spaces that address both environmental and social needs. This architectural vision led me to pursue a master's degree in Sustainable Architecture and Landscape Design at Politecnico di Milano in Italy.

I had set my sights on this course and university early in my undergraduate journey. From the very beginning, I was sure of what I wanted and took deliberate steps to prepare myself to achieve this goal—through academic excellence, focused research, and consistent self-development.

Invest Your Talent in Italy (IYT) Scholarship Details

I was honored to receive the prestigious Invest Your Talent in Italy (IYT) merit scholarship in 2022. This scholarship is offered by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency and Uni-Italia. It is awarded to a select group of meritorious individuals from specific countries, and I feel truly grateful to be among those chosen.

The scholarship includes a full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of €900 for nine months during the first academic year. Initially granted for one year, it can be renewed for a second academic year upon meeting the following three criteria:

  1. Demonstrating consistent academic success by acquiring a set number of credits during the first year.
  2. Enrolling in and completing an Italian language course.
  3. Securing an internship in an Italian company—either 3 months full-time or 6 months part-time.

If all documentation is submitted within the required deadlines and criteria are met, the scholarship is renewed with the same benefits. However, the scholarship is strictly limited to two academic years and does not cover any course extensions.

Educational Background

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from GD Goenka University, India—a five-year program during which I consistently received merit scholarships. I graduated with the highest academic distinction in my school, earning a CGPA of 8.83 and receiving the university’s Gold Medal for securing the top rank in the School of Architecture and Planning.

This track record of academic excellence and previous scholarship awards significantly strengthened my application for the IYT program.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Italian Universities?

I was very focused and intentional about my path. I had already identified the country, the university, and the specific course I wanted to pursue. I conducted thorough research via university websites and reached out to alumni and current students of the architecture department at Politecnico di Milano through LinkedIn. These interactions helped clarify doubts, gave me honest feedback, and guided me through the application process.

Standardized Test Scores and Requirements

For admission to Politecnico di Milano, I was required to submit a CV, portfolio, motivation letter, and two recommendation letters from academic or professional referees. Since my undergraduate program was conducted entirely in English, I submitted a certificate from my previous university confirming this, and I was exempted from taking an English language proficiency test like IELTS or TOEFL.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Invest Your Talent in Italy Scholarship?

The IYT scholarship application has a slightly different format. The most important component is a video presentation in which applicants explain why they deserve the scholarship. Unlike typical applications, there is no cover letter or recommendation letter required. Other supporting documents include a CV, certificates of merit if available, and an Italian language proficiency certificate if available. I focused on being authentic and clear in my video, expressing my goals and how this scholarship aligned with them.

How Was Your Experience at Politecnico di Milano?

My experience at Politecnico di Milano has been deeply enriching, both academically and personally. The course structure, studio-based learning, and international environment offered immense opportunities for growth. I particularly appreciated the balance between theory and hands-on design work. Living and studying in Italy also exposed me to diverse architectural contexts and cultures, which has expanded my creative perspective.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my clarity of purpose and long-standing preparation made my application stand out. I had already begun learning Italian at the Italian Embassy in New Delhi, which demonstrated my commitment to integrating into the culture and making the most of the scholarship. I also submitted my Gold Medal certificate, and discussed my aspirations in the video presentation—specifically, how studying architecture in Italy would enhance my career and personal development. This cohesive and well-prepared approach, I believe, came through with the evaluators.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I could go through the process again, I would begin preparing even earlier—especially in terms of finding accommodation and improving my Italian language skills before arriving in Italy. While English is the medium of instruction, daily life in Italy requires at least a basic understanding of Italian, and being fluent early on would have made the transition smoother.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Have a clear focus and work towards it with consistency. Start early—do your research, prepare your documents, and connect with people who have already walked this path. Do not be afraid to dream big—if you are committed and prepared, you can truly achieve anything. The sky is the limit!
