The Journey

My name is Socheata Horng, and I was born and raised in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. I am a recipient of the Australia Award and AusforASEAN (Australia for ASEAN) scholarship. This scholarship allows me to continue my Master of Environment at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia.

Academically, I completed my bachelor's degrees in International Relations and Professional Communications. Driven by a passion for advocating for sustainable development and addressing climate change, professionally, I worked at private organizations specializing in sustainability. During this time, I worked on sustainability-related initiatives from raising awareness and training to developing net-zero internal roadmaps, formulating sustainable finance policies, and crafting sustainability reports. These experiences not only expanded my expertise but also deepened my commitment to creating solutions for environmental challenges.

Despite my practical experiences, I recognized a need to enhance my technical knowledge in environmental systems and policy frameworks. This realization motivated me to pursue a master's degree, which will bridge the gaps in my understanding and enable me to contribute more effectively to sustainability initiatives.

Australia Awards Scholarship Details

Australia Awards Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship, provided by the Australian Government for students from developing countries in Asia, Pacific, and Africa to pursue a bachelor's, master's, or PhD degree in Australia. The study and research opportunities provided by Australia Awards Scholarships develop the skills and knowledge of individuals to drive change and contribute to development in their own countries.

Australia Award Scholarship is a fully-funded scholarship, covering full tuition fee, return air travel, living allowance, health insurance, English language support including IELTS preparation, supplementary academic support, and other supports.

On top of the Australia Awards scholarship, I am also an award recipient of Australia for ASEAN (Aus4ASEAN) Scholarships that are offered to scholars from ASEAN Member States and Timor-Leste. Aus4ASEAN scholars also have the opportunity to participate in the ASEAN Scholars Leadership Program, which provides a range of learning, networking, and professional development opportunities.

For the Aus4ASEAN scholarship in particular, applicants are assessed on their professional and personal qualities, academic competence, and their potential to impact one of the four priority areas in the ASEAN Outlook for the Indo-Pacific: maritime, connectivity, economic development, and the Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

For details information about the scholarship, I strongly suggest reading further on the website: https://www.dfat.gov.au/people-to-people/australia-awards/australia-awards-scholarships or the Australia Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook: https://www.dfat.gov.au/about-us/publications/australia-awards-scholarships-policy-handbook

Educational Background

I hold a dual bachelor's degree, majoring in International Relations and Professional Communication at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. These equipped me with a strong foundation in understanding global systems, including political, social, and economic aspects. These degrees prepared me for my current focus by instilling a deep understanding of international challenges, particularly in areas like policy development and governance in the climate space.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Griffith University?

Initially, I began by searching for the course availability and institutions that aligned with my academic interests and career goals. This can be done using the CRISCOS website -- the official Australian Government website that lists all Australian education providers that offer courses to people studying in Australia on student visas and the courses offered  https://cricos.education.gov.au/. After that, I narrowed down my options by further exploring each of my preferred universities’ websites. This allowed me to obtain more details information about programs such as admission criteria, course structures, and the specific subjects I would be studying throughout my master’s program.

For standardized tests like IELTS, I started by familiarizing myself with the test format and structures for each of the skills components – reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I dedicated time to practice each section, using preparation materials, mock exams, and online resources. This preparation ensured I was well-equipped to meet the language proficiency requirements for my chosen program. Despite the short period of preparation, I managed to meet the language requirement with an overall band of 7.5, with no band below 6.0.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Australia Awards Scholarship?

I thoroughly researched the scholarship a few years in advance before I decided to apply for the program. I found it helpful to thoroughly review the scholarship website and policy handbook, as they provided all the essential details I needed, from eligibility criteria to application requirements.

During the application stage, I made sure to gather all the required documents well ahead of time, as some, such as employment letters and IELTS test results, took longer to process. I also started drafting my essays early, allowing myself ample time for revisions and improvements. When I learned that my application had progressed to the interview stage, I dedicated time to preparation by carefully rereading my essay and participating in mock interviews. This approach helped me build confidence and articulate my thoughts clearly during the actual interview.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believed what made my application stand out was the combination of my practical experience, academic background, and a clear articulation of my passion for sustainability. I ensured my essays reflected my personal experiences, leadership journey, and impacts contributions. I also highlighted my career aspiration and how my proposed study will help me to reach wider impacts in the field of sustainability.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would actively seek help and support, whether through mentors, peers, or alumni. This would allow me to get advice and other useful information that I was not able to find in the existing online materials. Reflecting back, I struggled with the decision in choosing study subjects and schools, while also ensuring the completeness of my application submission. By reaching out for guidance and sharing the workload, I could have made the journey less overwhelming and more rewarding. Learning to seek support around me is a lesson I will take forward.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early. It's important to gather as much information as possible, such as eligibility criteria, deadlines, and program specifics, and leave adequate time for document preparation and a checklist. Key documents like IELTS test results, employment reports, academic transcripts, and educational references may take longer to obtain, so planning ahead is crucial.

When it comes to the application essay, do it gradually. Don’t aim for perfection in the first draft—read it out loud or share it with someone for feedback to ensure clarity and flow. With word limits often being strict, focus on being concise and straight to the point. For achievements or leadership examples, you don’t necessarily have to highlight a grand achievement. Some initiatives/experiences may seem small, but they had a meaningful impact. The key is to highlight leadership experiences and impacts that you’re genuinely proud of.

Last but not least, use storytelling skills as a way to let people know your journey, either in your essay or interview. By connecting the dots between your personal growth, academic background, and future aspirations, you can create an application that truly stands out. Let your authenticity and passion shine through every word! You own your story!
