The Journey
I’m Siv Eang Chea, from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I chose to pursue a Master of Legal Studies with a focus on Environmental Law because it perfectly bridges my professional background in the legal sector with my personal passion for sustainability. For me, this program is an opportunity to deepen my understanding of how legal frameworks can be used to drive environmental protection and social responsibility. It aligns with my long-term goal of contributing to more equitable and sustainable development in my country and beyond.
Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Details
The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship that covers full tuition fees, living allowance, medical and travel insurance, and round-trip airfare. I studied at Auckland Law School, University of Auckland.
Educational Background
I got a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies with a GPA of 3.3/4 from the Royal University of Phnom Penh. This helped me in preparing my scholarship application by providing a broad understanding of global issues, cultural diversity, and international policies, and equipped me with critical thinking and analytical skills.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Auckland?
I reviewed the admission requirements for the program I was applying for. Basic criteria include a GPE of 5.0 and an IELTS score of 7.0 (no band less than 6.5). I used the GPE calculator provided on the program’s website and confirmed that my GPA from my previous degree met the requirement. After that, I dedicated significant time to completing my application and preparing for the IELTS exam. Fortunately, my efforts paid off, and I achieved a score of 7.5 for IELTS.
The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship does not require an IELTS score at the time of your application. If you are successfully selected for further stages, the scholarship team will arrange for you to take the test. (Remember that this could change over time, so carefully check the required documents before you apply.) However, I registered for the test before knowing that I was selected for the further stage. I prepared for IELTS by practicing with online materials.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship?
I researched the eligibility and selection criteria, ensuring my goals aligned with the scholarship’s focus on development impact. I consulted with past recipients for guidance, prepared all required documents in advance, and invested time in refining my application to highlight my academic background, professional experience, and commitment to contributing to sustainable development after my studies.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I think my application demonstrated the link between my professional background, my academic goals, and my long-term commitment to sustainable development. I carefully explained how the program would help me build the legal knowledge and analytical skills needed to support environmental and social progress in my country. I also highlighted what I expected to gain from the study and how this learning would complement my previous experience and directly support my future career plans.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would attend scholarship information sessions to gain deeper insights about the application and selection process and connect with more alumni, whose experiences and advice could better inform and strengthen my application preparation.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice for anyone applying for a similar scholarship is to start early and thoroughly research the scholarship’s goals and selection criteria. Tailor your application to show how your background, goals, and values align with what the scholarship seeks, and clearly explain what you hope to gain from the opportunity. Connect with past recipients or mentors for guidance, and carefully prepare your application by highlighting your unique story and potential impact. Lastly, stay organized, gather all required documents early and leave enough time to refine your application.
