The Journey
My name is Saqiba Sheerazi, and I am originally from Pakistan. One of the proudest achievements of my life is being an alumna of the Australia Awards and a member of its global community, as well as a graduate of the University of Melbourne.
I was awarded the Australia Awards Scholarship in 2016 to pursue a Master’s in Information Systems at the University of Melbourne, which I completed between 2017 and 2018 (two-year full-time course). I chose to pursue this field to strengthen my ability to bridge business and technology, enhance my analytical capabilities, and contribute more effectively to impactful, technology-driven solutions.
Australia Awards Scholarship Details
I was selected for the prestigious Australia Awards Scholarship in 2016 from Pakistan. I secured admission to the University of Melbourne for a master’s in information systems (MIS), a two-year program that combines both coursework and research. I commenced my studies in March 2017 and successfully completed the program in December 2018. During my final semester, I secured an internship/co-op placement, which provided valuable industry exposure and practical experience.
Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?
No, I was not offered any other scholarships.
Educational Background
I completed my early education and higher studies in Pakistan, including an MPhil in Organic Chemistry from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. I began my professional career as a Chemistry teacher at the high school and college levels.
Subsequently, I appeared in Pakistan’s civil services competitive examination, successfully qualified, and was appointed as a civil servant with the Government of Pakistan in 2010. After gaining over five years of professional experience in public service, I became eligible to apply for the Australia Awards Scholarship.
The Australia Awards is a globally recognized and highly competitive scholarship program that supports professionals from eligible countries in both government and private development sectors. It provides full financial support, including tuition, stipend, and living expenses, enabling recipients to focus entirely on their academic and professional development, with the option to be accompanied by family.

I primarily relied on the official Australia Awards website to stay updated on application timelines, eligibility criteria, and program details. The website provides comprehensive and up-to-date information regarding participating universities, available programs, and application requirements.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
Yes, I completed the IELTS Academic test as part of the application requirements. Typically, a minimum score of 6.0 is required for eligibility; however, some universities, including the University of Melbourne, may require higher scores (up to 7.5, depending on the program).
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Australia Awards Scholarship?
I sought guidance from peers and senior colleagues who had previously received the Australia Awards Scholarship. Additionally, I attended informational workshops conducted by the Australian High Commission/Embassy, which provided valuable insights into the program’s objectives, expectations, and application process. These sessions helped me better understand how to align my application with the scholarship’s goals.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
My application stood out due to a well-structured and practical statement of purpose that clearly demonstrated my abilities, potential, and readiness for advanced academic study. I emphasized key qualities such as adaptability, resilience, and a strong determination to drive meaningful change. By highlighting my commitment to creating a positive impact and aligning my goals with the values of the scholarship, I was able to present myself as a capable and purpose-driven candidate.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would place greater emphasis on clearly articulating the impact I aim to create at both a personal and professional level through the scholarship. I would also highlight my passion for engaging with diverse cultures, collaborating with peers from different backgrounds, and learning through shared experiences, as these are key aspects of the program.
