The Journey

I’m Samuel Osaretin Buraimoh, from Edo State, Nigeria. I studied at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, where I earned my Bachelor of Technology degree in Food Science and Technology. Additionally, I have a master’s degree in food science from the University of British Columbia, Canada.

I decided to further my education to deepen my expertise in food science, quality, and safety, to contribute to the development of safe, nutritious, and sustainable food systems. This is particularly important considering current global challenges, including the rising incidence of foodborne illnesses, contamination outbreaks, supply chain disruptions, climate-related impacts on food production, and the increasing demand for sustainable and high-quality food products. By acquiring advanced knowledge and practical skills, I aim to play a critical role in enhancing food safety standards, reducing risks to public health, and supporting sustainable practices within the food industry.

Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Details

I was awarded a fully funded Mastercard Foundation Scholarship to pursue my graduate studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada. This scholarship covers tuition, living expenses, and other associated costs, enabling me to fully focus on my academic and professional development without financial constraints.

Educational Background

I graduated with First Class Honours in my Bachelor’s degree program, reflecting my commitment to academic excellence and mastery of key concepts in my field. Throughout my studies, I gained a solid foundation in food science, microbiology, nutrition, quality assurance, food safety, and statistical data analysis, combining both theoretical understanding and hands-on practical experience. This strong academic and practical background has well-prepared me to advance into graduate-level studies and contribute meaningfully to research and innovation in food quality and safety.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of British Columbia?

To prepare for my applications to graduate institutions, I undertook a series of deliberate steps to ensure I met both academic and professional requirements. First, I researched programs and institutions to identify those that aligned closely with my academic interests and my long-term career goals. I reviewed admission criteria, including GPA requirements, prerequisite courses, and standardized tests, and ensured I met or exceeded them.

Next, I enhanced my academic profile by participating in relevant coursework, research projects, and practical experiences that demonstrated my knowledge and skills. I also gathered strong letters of recommendation from professors and mentors who could attest to my academic abilities, work ethic, and potential for graduate-level study.

Finally, I focused on crafting a compelling statement of purpose that highlighted my background, motivation, research interests, and career aspirations, while tailoring each application to the specific institution. Through this thorough preparation, I was able to submit strong and competitive applications.

Talk About How You Find Your Information, as Well as the Standardized Tests You Have Taken

I did not take standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, or GMAT, as they were not required for the programs to which I applied.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out due to a combination of strong academic performance, practical experience, and clear alignment with my field of study. Graduating with First Class Honours demonstrated my commitment to excellence and mastery of key concepts in food science, quality, and safety. Additionally, my involvement in research projects, community engagement, and professional development activities showcased my initiative, practical skills, and ability to contribute meaningfully to both academic and societal goals. Finally, my well-articulated statement of purpose clearly conveyed my passion, motivation, and long-term vision, which I believe resonated strongly with the admissions committee.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Research the program and its requirements carefully and ensure that your application clearly demonstrates how your academic achievements, personal experiences, and career goals align with the scholarship’s mission. Take the time to craft a genuine and original statement of purpose that reflects your true passion and aspirations, rather than relying on AI or external tools.
