MBA Student Samita Thongbut from Thailand Shares Her Journey of Studying at Yonsei University, South Korea

My name is Samita Thongbut, and I’m originally from Thailand. I pursued my MBA in South Korea because I wanted to gain international exposure and develop a deeper understanding of global business and marketing. Growing up in Thailand and later studying abroad gave me a strong interest in working with international markets and cross-cultural business environments.

I chose to study business because I was interested in how companies grow internationally and how marketing strategies differ across cultures. Studying abroad allowed me to challenge myself academically while also developing independence and adaptability.

Global Korea Scholarship Details

I received a scholarship to pursue my MBA in South Korea. The scholarship was provided by the South Korean government through the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under the Global Korea Scholarship Program (GKS). It fully funded my graduate studies by covering tuition fees, airfare, living expenses, and a one-year Korean language program.

Applications are processed through either the Embassy track or the University track. I applied through the Embassy track, which allows applicants to select up to three universities. I chose this track because my preferred university, Yonsei University, required applicants to apply through the Embassy track, as they prefer candidates to go through an initial screening process. The Embassy track is also more competitive, with only around 10 candidates being finally shortlisted in my application year. In this track, the selection process consisted of three stages: an interview with the Korean Embassy, an interview with the NIIED, and interviews with the selected universities if shortlisted by them.

Educational Background

Before pursuing my MBA, I completed a bachelor’s degree in economics at Chulalongkorn University with a GPA of 3.20/4.00. My studies focused on business economics and operational strategy, which provided me with a strong foundation in strategic thinking, market analysis, and consumer behavior.

This background prepared me well for graduate study because I already had a fundamental understanding of business concepts, which allowed me to engage more deeply with advanced coursework during my MBA.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Yonsei University?

How Did You Find Information About the GKS Scholarship and Yonsei University?

I mainly researched universities and scholarships through online platforms (i.e., YouTube), university websites, and scholarship databases. I also looked at forums and communities where international students shared their experiences studying abroad. This helped me understand the application requirements, scholarship opportunities, and the overall study environment in different countries.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests?

Yes, I prepared for English proficiency exams (IELTS and TOEIC) as part of the application process. Since my program was conducted in English, demonstrating English proficiency was required. In addition, I specifically prepared for the TOEIC because it is widely preferred in Korea. I also prepared for the Korean proficiency exam (TOPIK), as having Korean language skills would be advantageous while studying in Korea. Additionally, under the GKS program, I will attend a one-year Korean language program, which helps place students in an appropriate class level. Alternatively, students can take a placement test at the language institute to determine their suitable class level.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Global Korea Scholarship?

I focused on preparing a strong application package. This included writing a clear personal statement explaining my academic goals, career aspirations, and reasons for studying abroad. I also prepared my academic transcripts along with three recommendation letters: one from my bachelor’s professor, one from a Korean professor I studied under during my exchange program, and one from my team manager during my internship.

One thing I focused on was clearly communicating how the program aligned with my long-term career goals and how studying internationally would help me contribute to global business environments in the future.

How Was Your Experience at Yonsei University?

Studying in South Korea was a valuable experience. It exposed me to a multicultural environment where I met students from many different countries. This allowed me to exchange perspectives and learn about business practices in different regions.

Living abroad also helped me develop independence, resilience, and cross-cultural communication skills.

How Do You Rate Yonsei University Academically and Why?

Academically, the program was challenging and rewarding. The courses emphasized both theoretical knowledge and practical applications, which helped prepare students for real-world business situations.

How Does Yonsei University Support International Students?

The university provided support through the international office that helped students with administrative processes, orientation, and adjustment to living in Korea. There were also student clubs and activities that helped international students connect with others.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?

My MBA program was conducted in English, which allowed international students from different countries to participate without needing to be fluent in Korean.

What Did You Pursue After the Scholarship?

After completing my studies, I began working in business development and marketing, focusing on international clients. My experience studying abroad helped me work in cross-border business environments and communicate with global partners.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing Korean?

Academically, students in English-taught programs can complete their studies without knowing the local language. However, learning basic Korean can be very helpful for daily life and for building stronger relationships locally.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because I already had an academic background related to Korea. I previously studied in Korea as an exchange student at Chung-Ang University for one semester, where I focused on business-related courses. Through this experience, I became familiar with the academic environment in Korea and was able to obtain a recommendation letter from a Korean professor. In addition, I graduated from Chulalongkorn University, one of the top universities in Thailand, which was recognized by the interviewers during the selection process.

I was also able to clearly explain my motivation for studying in Korea. During my exchange experience, I developed a strong interest in the country’s culture and lifestyle, particularly how Korean cities integrate art, culture, and nature into urban life. This experience strengthened my desire to pursue further studies there.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would start researching scholarships earlier and apply to more opportunities. Having more options can reduce pressure during the decision process.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice would be:

• Start researching scholarships early.
• Prepare a strong personal statement that clearly explains your goals.
• Apply to multiple scholarships and universities to increase your chances.
• Don’t be discouraged if the process feels competitive.
