The Journey
My name is Sabera, and although I am now in the USA, my roots are in Bangladesh. At the University of Central Florida (UCF), where I am pursuing a master's degree in biotechnology, I am actively engaged in research in Dr. Saleh Naser's lab. My research focuses on intestinal epithelial cell biology, gut inflammation, and drug-based therapeutic regulation.
I've always had a strong interest in the relationship between molecular biology, immunology, and human disease, particularly diseases like cancer and Crohn's disease, which is why I decided to pursue this degree. I can develop the technical and analytical abilities required to make a significant contribution to biomedical research and, eventually, to treatments that enhance patient outcomes through additional education.
Research and Teaching Assistantship Details
The financing of my degree here at UCF was not from a scholarship, but a fully funded opportunity where the tuition fees are fully covered by UCF, and then I receive a stipend for working as an RA or TA in the university. I am currently taking both RA and TA responsibilities at UCF, which pays me enough to survive in the US. Additionally, my health insurance is also covered by UCF.
Educational Background
I previously completed my B.Sc. with a double major in Biotechnology and Microbiology from BRAC University in Dhaka, Bangladesh. I graduated with the highest distinction, earning a CGPA of 3.93, and was honored multiple times on the Vice Chancellor’s List for outstanding academic performance.
My undergraduate education provided me with a strong foundation in molecular biology, microbiology, and immunology, equipping me with both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Central Florida?
I really thought of Google as my best friend, and while searching for Master's programs that were funded, I stumbled upon UCF’s program website and decided to apply for it.
As part of the requirements for international students at UCF, I took the TOEFL to demonstrate proficiency in English. I prepared for the test over the course of approximately 14 days, using a combination of official ETS materials and targeted online resources such as YouTube tutorials. My preparation was effective, and I achieved a decent score. Additionally, my undergraduate degree was taught entirely in English, which, along with English being my second language, allowed me to feel confident in my reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Research and Teaching Assistantship?
I applied directly through the UCF website, confident that my academic record and hands-on experience in an international research laboratory would make me a strong candidate. The primary preparation I undertook was for the interview, which was conducted by a faculty member and focused mainly on my undergraduate research and my internship at icddr,b. During the interview, I was able to clearly discuss my past research projects and laboratory experience, which allowed me to successfully pass the interview and earn the opportunity to join the program.
How Is (was) Your Experience at the University of Central Florida?
My experience at UCF has been very positive. The faculty members are knowledgeable and approachable, and the graduate coordinator has been extremely helpful in guiding students through academic and research-related processes. The laboratories are well-equipped, providing an excellent environment for hands-on learning and research. Overall, it has been a supportive and enriching experience.
How Do You Rate the University of Central Florida Academically and Why?
I would rate UCF very highly academically. The courses are rigorous and well-structured, providing a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Faculty members are experts in their fields and are approachable, offering valuable guidance and mentorship. The research opportunities are excellent, with well-equipped laboratories and access to cutting-edge techniques, which have greatly enhanced my learning and professional development.
How Does the University of Central Florida Support International Students?
UCF provides strong support for international students. The university hosts multicultural events and social gatherings, including food festivals, which make it easy to connect with others and feel included. There is also a pantry that provides free resources, helping students with daily needs. The community is welcoming, and it is especially nice to see a large Bangladeshi community, which makes adjusting to life in the U.S. much easier. Overall, UCF fosters a supportive and inclusive environment for international students.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe several factors made my application stand out. I had strong letters of recommendation from both my undergraduate supervisor and my internship supervisor at icddr,b, which highlighted my research skills and dedication. My academic record, including a high CGPA and experience as a teaching assistant, demonstrated my commitment and capability. Additionally, my hands-on research experience, spanning both in vivo experiments and bioinformatics analysis, showcased a well-rounded skill set. A good TOEFL score also reflected my proficiency in English, ensuring I could succeed in an academic environment taught in English. Altogether, these experiences and achievements presented me as a strong, prepared candidate for graduate studies.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Nothing for applying here, but I would definitely apply to more places just to increase my chances of getting selected.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice for those looking to apply for a similar scholarship would be to focus on building a strong academic and research profile. Obtain meaningful research experience, whether in a lab, through internships, or in bioinformatics projects, and seek mentors who can provide strong letters of recommendation. Highlight any teaching or leadership experience, maintain a good academic record, and ensure your English proficiency is well-documented through tests like TOEFL if required. Finally, prepare thoroughly for the interview, being ready to discuss your research, experiences, and motivations clearly and confidently. Demonstrating passion, dedication, and readiness for graduate-level work can make a big difference.
