The Journey
My name is Rudo Chikondi Mello-Kapezi, and I am an international development professional currently working with the CGIAR System Organization, supporting global research-for-development programmes. I hold a Master’s degree in Leadership for Sustainability and a Bachelor’s degree in Education (Social Studies) from the University of Malawi. I chose to pursue Leadership for Sustainability to contribute meaningfully to global sustainable development, particularly through sustainable project management that balances people, profit, and the planet. Over the years, I have gained experience in programme and portfolio management, MELIA processes, and donor compliance, supporting large-scale development and research initiatives across Africa and globally.

- A one-time travel grant of SEK 15,000 (SEK 10,000 for scholars from Armenia,
- Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine).
- Membership in the SI Network for Global Professionals (NFGP), a platform for professional growth and networking while in Sweden.
After the scholarship period, recipients become part of the Sweden Alumni Network, which offers continued networking and professional development opportunities.
Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?
I was also offered the MasterMind Scholarship to pursue my master’s degree at KU Leuven in Belgium.
Educational Background
I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, majoring in Social Studies, with a GPA of 3.3 out of 4.0. My academic background, combined with participation in youth leadership programmes such as the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) and the UBUNTU United Nations Leadership Programme, prepared me well for a master’s in Sustainability Leadership. Through my undergraduate studies, I took courses in Programme Development, Management, and Evaluation, which naturally aligned with my later focus on Sustainable Project Management. Completing my degree equipped me to excel in my current role as a Project Management Specialist.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Malmö University? / How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and Malmö University?
I subscribed to numerous scholarship newsletters, but Scholarship Positions happened to be the most reliable source. That’s where I found both scholarships I eventually secured. So basically, I would review specific scholarship pages to identify eligible programmes and universities. For both scholarships, the list of approved schools and programmes was provided directly on the scholarship website, which guided my applications.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests?
I took the IELTS and obtained preparation materials directly from the British Council after paying the examination fee.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP)?
I carefully read every section of the scholarship page to ensure I didn’t miss any details. I reviewed the list of eligible programmes, selected three that aligned with my interests, and created separate folders for each. After confirming my eligibility for each programme, I gathered all the required documents before starting the applications. I also asked volunteers to proofread my essays. Once all application documents were ready, I submitted them following the provided instructions, including the separate submission for the scholarship itself.
How Was Your Experience at Malmö University?
My time in Sweden was incredibly enjoyable. Being on a full scholarship made life comfortable because the stipend covered all my expenses, so I didn’t need a side job. Studying at Malmö University was fantastic; it’s a vibrant hub for international students and just a 15-minute train ride from Copenhagen. It was truly the best time of my academic life.
How Do You Rate Malmö University Academically and Why?
10/10. Malmö University provided an excellent learning environment, and Sweden itself is a clean, safe, and inspiring country. I loved it.
How Does Malmö University Support International Students?
Yes, very much so. The support for international students is exceptional.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Swedish?
My Master’s programme was taught entirely in English, though some other programmes are conducted in Swedish.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Swedish?
Not at all. Over 80% of Swedes speak English fluently. I never experienced any language barriers, and I doubt other international students did either.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
Authenticity. I answered each question in my own words and relating to my own experiences and aspirations without copying anyone. I applied for a programme I was genuinely passionate about, which made it easy to express my motivations sincerely. I also took the time to read all available information to ensure my application was complete and well-informed. My advice is not to rush. Take time to research the scholarship, understand why it fits your goals, and clearly communicate why you are the right candidate.
What Would You Have Done Differently If You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Nothing.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Getting a scholarship isn’t easy, but it’s absolutely possible. It’s not always about being a top student; it’s about having genuine ambition and expressing it authentically. Your passion and sincerity come through in your application; reviewers can feel it. Don’t give up. Have someone review your essays before submitting. Be authentic, don’t focus on the competition, and trust in yourself and God’s plan for your life.
