My name is Rashmi Venkatesh, and I am from Bengalore, India. I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Electromobility at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) in Germany. My academic interests include automotive engineering, electromobility, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and autonomous driving technologies.

I chose to continue my education in this field because the automotive industry is changing significantly toward electric and smart mobility systems. I wanted to gain deeper technical knowledge and research experience in this growing area. Germany, as a global centre for automotive engineering and innovation, is an ideal place for me to study and develop my expertise.

Educational Background

Before starting my master’s degree, I completed my bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in India. During my studies, I built a solid foundation in engineering basics. My coursework and projects introduced me to areas like control systems, data analysis, and intelligent systems. This sparked my interest in new technologies such as AI-driven mobility and autonomous driving. My academic background set me up well for the mix of subjects in the Electromobility program, which brings together mechanical engineering, electrical systems, and data science.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to FAU?

To apply for FAU, I researched universities that offered programs in electric mobility and automotive technologies. I prepared all the required documents, including my academic transcripts, statement of purpose, and proof of English language proficiency.

I also emphasized my technical background and interest in AI and automotive innovation in my application. Furthermore, I investigated the program structure, faculty research areas, and Germany’s strong industry connections to make sure the program fits my long-term career goals.

What Drew You to Choose This Country to Pursue Your Degree?

Germany is among the top nations in advanced manufacturing and automotive engineering. The future of mobility has been significantly shaped by businesses like BMW, Mercedes-Benz Group, and Volkswagen Group.

Another significant factor was that, in contrast to many other nations, public universities in Germany provide excellent education with minimal or no tuition costs, making it more accessible for international students. For students interested in engineering and technology, Germany also provides excellent research opportunities and industry collaboration. 

What Were Some of the Challenges You Faced as an International Student, Particularly Regarding Living Costs or Part-time Work Opportunities?

Finding accommodation, managing living expenses, particularly rent, is one of the biggest issues facing international students in Germany. In university cities, housing can be competitive.

Finding part-time work is another difficulty, especially if you don't speak German well. Many jobs require at least rudimentary German language skills, even though there are opportunities for student jobs or research assistant positions. It can be difficult to juggle part-time employment and academic obligations during demanding semesters.

Looking Back, Would You Recommend Studying Here for International Students Seeking Affordable Higher Education? Why or Why Not?

Yes, I would recommend studying in Germany for international students seeking high-quality yet affordable higher education. Public universities provide excellent academic programs, strong research infrastructure, and global industry exposure.

Although there can be challenges such as bureaucracy, housing, and language barriers, the overall experience is rewarding. Students gain international exposure, technical knowledge, and career opportunities in one of the world’s strongest engineering economies.

Academically, students can succeed without knowing German because the program is taught in English. However, learning basic German is highly beneficial for daily life, internships, and part-time job opportunities. Even a basic level of German can significantly improve integration and career prospects in Germany.
