The Journey

My name is Ragini Kumari, and I am from a small town in India. I come from a modest background, where access to quality education has always been a priority. Despite personal and social limitations, I have always been driven by a deep passion for learning and teaching, particularly in the field of Mathematics. I pursued a research project focused on innovative educational practices in schools. My goal is to become a school principal and bring meaningful change to under-resourced educational institutions, especially by integrating ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and aligning pedagogy with NEP 2020 goals.

MEXT Teacher Training Scholarship Details

I received the MEXT Teacher Training Scholarship, awarded by MEXT, Japan, which covers tuition fees and pays 143,000 JPY per month. This scholarship enabled me to fully focus on my studies and research without the stress of financial constraints. My Japanese language training was at Tottori University, Tottori, Japan. Whereas my Research work was at Shimane University, Shimane, Japan committed to this one because of its alignment with my educational goals and the institution’s focus on educational reform.

Educational Background

I hold a Bachelor's degree in science with a specialization in Mathematics and a B.Ed. degree in Education. These programs gave me a strong foundation in both pedagogy and content knowledge. I also pursued a Diploma course in guidance and counselling. Being passionate about Education, I pursued an M.A. in Education and also completed professional development courses and certifications related to digital education and curriculum design. My consistent academic performance and my hands-on teaching experience made me a strong candidate for advanced research in education.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Tottori University?

I prepared using the OER available for this scholarship. Also, I used test papers for IELTS and TOEFL while preparing for the entrance examination. Also, I practiced some of the free resources available on the net for English for the SAT and GMAT.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the MEXT Scholarship?

One of the most valuable resources in my preparation was a comprehensive course guide that listed universities, departments, and faculty profiles across various institutions. This guide served as a roadmap, it helped me narrow down universities whose vision aligned with my research interest in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in education.

I carefully went through the course guide to identify professors whose areas of expertise overlapped with mine. That’s how I found the professor. I eventually applied for his work on integrating digital tools in rural education settings matched my passion for using ICT to bridge learning gaps in underserved areas. By studying his publications and current projects, I was able to craft a highly personalized Statement of Purpose that not only reflected my research goals but also demonstrated how they aligned with his ongoing work.

In addition to the course guide, I used official university websites to double-check faculty profiles and department goals. I also ensured I met the language requirements and took the IELTS exam, scoring 7.5, and prepared using mock tests and online materials.

This strategic mapping of interests, enabled by the course guide, ensured that my application wasn’t generic but tailored to both the institution’s and professor’s academic focus, significantly increasing my chances of being selected.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

What made my application stand out was a combination of purpose and practicality. I didn’t just express a desire to contribute to rural education; I demonstrated it through my track record, such as launching a bagless learning program, mentoring schoolmates since 9th grade, and using ICT tools to enhance learning outcomes. My story had clarity, authenticity, and a long-term vision that resonated with the scholarship panel.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I could redo the process, I would start preparing my documents even earlier, especially for recommendation letters and SOP drafts. I would also try to connect with previous scholars from the same scholarship for more insights. Additionally, I would have applied to more institutions and scholarships to widen my options.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early. Be authentic in your research synopsis and show how your journey aligns with the scholarship’s values. Tailor each application specifically, and avoid using the same method for all. Also, seek feedback and revise your drafts multiple times. Finally, don’t underestimate the value of extracurricular initiatives and community involvement. These often make your application more compelling than grades alone.
