The Journey

My name is Ragini Gupta, and I am from India. I recently completed my M.Tech in Functional Materials and Nanotechnology from the Department of Physics at IIT Madras. With a strong interest in cutting-edge material science and device fabrication, I chose this program to deepen my understanding of nanotechnology and its real-world applications. My passion for research and innovation drove me to pursue further education in this field, especially in areas where academia and industry intersect.

DAAD KOSPIE Scholarship Details

I was awarded the DAAD KOSPIE (Combined Study and Practice Stays for Engineers from Developing Countries) scholarship for carrying out my Master's thesis at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. This fully-funded scholarship supported my stay and research during my final semester. It was an incredible opportunity to gain international research experience. While I did not apply for other scholarships, DAAD KOSPIE stood out due to its focus on practical learning and exposure to German research infrastructure.

Educational Background

Before my Master's degree at IIT Madras, I completed my undergraduate studies in Physics. My academic journey has always been marked by a strong performance, and I graduated from my M.Tech program with a CGPA of 9.2, which helped make me eligible for DAAD KOSPIE. The rigorous coursework, research training, and lab experience during my program laid a solid foundation in materials science and nanofabrication techniques, enabling me to contribute effectively during my thesis in Germany.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to RWTH Aachen University?

To find suitable opportunities, I regularly browsed official university websites, DAAD portals, and academic networking platforms like ResearchGate and LinkedIn. I did not need to take standardized tests like the GRE or IELTS for this scholarship since the medium of instruction at IIT Madras is English, and that was accepted by the host institution. However, I ensured that my academic transcripts, statement of purpose, and recommendation letters clearly reflected my research interests and academic strengths.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD KOSPIE Scholarship?

The preparation involved thorough research into DAAD programs and eligibility criteria. I carefully aligned my goals with the KOSPIE program’s objectives and highlighted how this international research opportunity would help me grow professionally. I worked closely with my professors and mentors at IIT Madras, who provided valuable feedback on my application documents. My application focused on both my academic performance and my motivation to gain hands-on experience in nanofabrication.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my strong academic record, clear motivation for international research, and alignment of my thesis work with the research themes at RWTH Aachen made my application stand out. My previous lab experiences and interest in cleanroom-based fabrication techniques were particularly relevant. Moreover, my ability to express how this experience would help me contribute to the scientific community likely strengthened my application.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would have started my preparation a bit earlier to explore more host institutions and potential supervisors. I would also try to engage in more networking with alumni or students who previously went through the DAAD KOSPIE program to gain insights into the research culture and expectations in Germany.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early and do thorough research on host institutions and potential mentors whose work aligns with your interests. Focus on building a strong academic profile, but also invest time in crafting a compelling statement of purpose. Stay in touch with your professors—they can provide guidance and strong recommendation letters. Most importantly, be genuine about your goals and articulate how the scholarship will help you contribute meaningfully to your field.
