The Journey
Hi, my name is Patrick, and I'm originally from Indonesia. I moved to Singapore six years ago and am currently pursuing a degree in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). I chose this field because of my genuine passion for data analytics and the ability to transform raw data into meaningful insights. There's something exciting about uncovering patterns and stories hidden within data, and I knew this was the direction I wanted to take my education.
ASEAN Scholarship Details
I was awarded the ASEAN Scholarship at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), which is a full-ride scholarship covering the full cost of my studies.
Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?
N/A , the ASEAN Scholarship at NTU was the only scholarship I received.
Educational Background
Prior to university, I completed my A-Levels with 90 rank points. My strong academic foundation gave me the discipline and analytical mindset needed to pursue a rigorous program like Data Science and AI, and I believe it played a significant role in my scholarship application.
How Did You Find Information About ASEAN Scholarship and Nanyang Technological University (NTU)?
I applied directly through the NTU admissions website, which made the process relatively straightforward. The information about the ASEAN Scholarship was available through the official channels, so I'd encourage prospective students to explore university websites thoroughly as a first step.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I did not take any standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, TOEFL, or GRE as part of my application process.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the ASEAN Scholarship?
My preparation focused on two main areas: crafting thoughtful essays and preparing for the interview. For the essays, I took time to reflect on my personal journey, motivations, and goals, making sure my passion for data science came through clearly. For the interview, I practiced articulating my experiences confidently and made sure I could speak naturally about who I am and what I bring to the table.
How Has Your Experience at NTU been?
I'm currently in my second year, and it has been a genuinely enriching experience. Living in a hall has been a highlight; it's a great way to build friendships and immerse yourself in campus life. The coursework has also been very insightful, pushing me to think critically and apply what I learn in practical ways.
How Does Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Support International Students?
NTU has a solid community for international students. There are support systems and communities in place that make it easier to settle in, especially for those coming from abroad. As someone who moved from Indonesia, I found it reassuring to know that the support exists.
What Did You Pursue After the ASEAN Scholarship?
I am currently in my second year and actively looking for internships to gain industry experience in data science and AI.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe two things set my application apart. First, my academic results, strong A-Level scores, demonstrated that I had the foundation to handle a demanding program. Second, my co-curricular activities, which highlighted my leadership abilities and commitment to community service. Scholarships aren't just looking for academic performance; they want well-rounded individuals who can contribute beyond the classroom.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Looking back, I don't have major regrets about the process. If anything, I would have started researching scholarship opportunities even earlier to give myself more time to refine my application materials.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Just apply, don't talk yourself out of it before you've even tried. Beyond that, confidence is key, especially in the interview stage. Walk in knowing that you deserve to be there and let that show. Prepare well, be authentic, and trust in what you've built academically and personally. The scholarship committees want to see the real you, not a rehearsed version of what you think they want to hear.
