M.Sc. Data Science Student Osama Haider from Pakistan Shares His Journey of Studying at the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy

My name is Osama Haider, and I am from Pakistan. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 2021 with a CGPA of 3.57/4. After graduation, I joined TEO International (Denmark) as a backend engineer and later progressed to senior software engineer, mainly working with .NET, APIs, SQL/NoSQL databases, cloud services (AWS), and microservices architectures.

During my professional journey, I worked on data-intensive applications, automation tools, and performance optimization projects, which exposed me to large-scale data handling and analytics. While working on these systems, I realized the growing importance of data science, machine learning, and AI-driven decision-making, which motivated me to pursue a Master’s in Data Science. This program allows me to combine my practical engineering experience with advanced analytical and machine learning skills.

I am passionate about building scalable data-driven solutions, exploring predictive modeling, and applying AI techniques to solve real-world business problems. Studying in Italy also gives me the opportunity to collaborate with international peers and gain exposure to global best practices in technology.

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a CGPA of 3.57/4. My coursework covered programming, data structures, algorithms, databases, software engineering, operating systems, and computer networks, which gave me a solid foundation in computer science.

During my studies, I also worked on academic projects and mini-research projects involving data processing, backend system design, and database optimization, which helped me gain hands-on experience in solving technical problems. I explored topics such as data analysis, algorithm optimization, and software design patterns, which strengthened my logical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This educational foundation prepared me well for advanced studies in data science and analytics, as I was already familiar with programming, working with datasets, and understanding system architectures. It also helped me quickly adapt to machine learning frameworks, data modeling, and statistical analysis, which I use in my current master’s program.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Milano-Bicocca?

I researched and shortlisted the top universities in Italy offering Data Science programs. I carefully checked their course structure, requirements, and deadlines.

After proper preparation, I applied early to the University of Milano-Bicocca and was selected in the early admission call.

How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and the University of Milano-Bicocca?

After receiving my admission offer, I researched all available scholarships related to my university and region. I visited the official university and regional websites regularly.

I noted down important dates and prepared documents in advance to avoid last-minute issues.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

No, I did not take any standardized tests. For admission to the University of Milano-Bicocca and the fully funded scholarship, IELTS or other tests were not required.

I submitted an English proficiency certificate issued by my bachelor’s university, which was accepted without any issues.

How is (was) Your Experience at the University of Milano-Bicocca? 

It has been around 5–6 months, and I have successfully completed my first semester with good grades. My experience at the University of Milano-Bicocca has been very positive.

The academic environment is friendly and supportive. I feel motivated and comfortable studying here.

How Do You Rate the University of Milano-Bicocca Academically and Why? 

Academically, I would rate the university very highly. The courses are well-structured and updated according to industry needs.

Professors encourage discussion and critical thinking. This makes learning more practical and engaging.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Italian?

All classes are conducted in English, as this Master’s program is fully English-taught. Lectures, assignments, and exams are all in English.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing Italian?

There are no academic problems for students who do not know the local language. All lectures, materials, and exams are in English.

University staff and classmates communicate well in English, which makes academic life easy. Learning a local language only helps in daily life outside the university.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my strong academic record and professional experience made my application stand out. Having a 3.57/4 CGPA showed academic consistency.

My backend engineering experience also demonstrated practical skills and readiness for advanced studies.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would start preparing my documents even earlier. I would also apply for more scholarships to increase my chances.

Better early planning would make the overall process less stressful.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship? 

Do proper research and organize all documents carefully. Mark important deadlines and follow requirements strictly.

Apply as early as possible and stay consistent. Scholarships are achievable with the right timing and preparation.
