The Journey
My name is Olayemi Stephen Bakare. I am from Nigeria, and my academic background is in microbiology. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from Adekunle Ajasin University, Nigeria, a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science from Babcock University, and I am currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics at Queen Mary University of London. My interdisciplinary background reflects my passion for applying computational approaches to biological challenges.
Google DeepMind Scholarship Details
I was awarded the Google DeepMind Scholarship at Queen Mary University of London for the 2024/2025 academic year. This scholarship aims to support and promote the participation of underrepresented students in the field of artificial intelligence and related disciplines. It fully covered my tuition, living expenses, costs for personal devices, travel costs to the UK, and costs associated with attending AI conferences. I was also assigned a Google DeepMind employee in a closely related field as a mentor.
Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?
Yes. I was offered a fully funded Graduate Assistantship to pursue an MS in Microbiology at North Dakota State University, which covers my full tuition and provides a monthly stipend.
Educational Background
I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology, with a GPA of 4.48/5. A Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science with a 4.44/5 GPA. These academic experiences gave me a solid foundation in both wet-lab and computational techniques. My coursework and research experiences prepared me to apply confidently to the master’s program in bioinformatics.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Queen Mary University of London?
I began by researching programs that align with my interests. I examined the course structure, faculty, and funding opportunities. I was aware of the DeepMind scholarship, but my program was not included in previous years; however, it was included in 2024. I submitted my application, which included a compelling statement of purpose and letters of recommendation from previous lecturers. I then applied for the scholarship separately after gaining admission.
How Is Your Experience at Queen Mary University of London?
My experience at QMUL has been enriching and transformative. The Bioinformatics program provided a strong balance between theoretical foundations and practical computational training. The faculty is supportive and approachable, and the curriculum is designed to challenge and equip students with industry-relevant skills. Beyond academics, the diversity of the student body and the collaborative learning environment have broadened my global perspective. I was able to make new friends, study in a great city, and work on an AI project under the supervision of an amazing advisor.
How Did You Find Information About the Google DeepMind Scholarship and Queen Mary University of London?
I regularly checked university websites, scholarship forums, and social media groups (especially LinkedIn and X). I also have some WhatsApp and Telegram groups where scholarships are posted regularly.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests?
Yes, I took the IELTS and scored 8.0 out of 9.0. I prepared by using materials from the British Council, taking practice tests online, and dedicating time to improving my writing. I particularly found the IELTS Made Easy eBook by IELTS Buddy helpful.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Google DeepMind Scholarship?
I carefully reviewed the scholarship criteria and made sure that my application clearly demonstrated how I met the eligibility and selection standards. I highlighted my academic achievements, leadership, volunteering experience, and dedication to diversity within the field of Artificial Intelligence. Additionally, I tailored my application to reflect my interdisciplinary education and its relevance to my course of study.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe it was the combination of my interdisciplinary background, demonstrated passion for bioinformatics, and my vision of how I plan to use AI and bioinformatic tools to address real-world problems, especially in healthcare and agriculture. I also ensured that I communicated a clear career goal and how the program and scholarship align with that vision.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would have started my application process earlier to reduce the pressure and possibly find a previous awardee who is open to helping me review it before submission. I’m glad it worked out regardless!
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
I would advise you to apply. Many people don’t complete their scholarship applications because they worry about how competitive it is. For instance, in my admission cycle with over 600 applicants, I was one of three Google DeepMind Scholars at QMUL for 2024. I was the only international student chosen in my cohort, and the first from the School of Biological and Behavioral Sciences. Even if the chances are only 5%, I recommend submitting your application and letting the committee review it rather than self-disqualifying. Also, start early, do thorough research, and tailor your application to the specific scholarship and institution. Finally, stay resilient and continue applying even if you face rejections—they are all part of the process.
