The Journey

Hello everyone, my name is Nohely. I’m from Ecuador and I’m currently pursuing a Master’s degree in New Zealand. I’ve always enjoyed studying and feel deeply passionate about being in an academic environment, although I must admit that while my grades were good, they weren’t always the highest. I consider myself an analytical and curious person, always interested in understanding how and why things work. This curiosity led me to develop a strong interest in processes and industries. I also firmly believe that we can generate a positive impact in the societies we live in, which is why I actively participate in environmental and social volunteer organizations. This allows me to combine professional development with service to others.

Additionally, I was selected as a fully funded delegate for the Global Peace Summit Sydney 2025, which covered flights, accommodation, and event costs.

Academic Background

In Ecuador, I studied Industrial Engineering and financed my studies through a full scholarship that covered tuition. This academic background is closely related to my current master’s degree in Supply Chain Management. I’ve always been passionate about understanding how processes work across various industries, and developing professionally in this field is one of my main goals.

How Did I Prepare to Apply to the Auckland University of Technology?

The Manaaki Scholarship application process involves applying first for the scholarship and then to the university. In the years leading up to my application, I studied English on my own and also took tutoring sessions. I chose the Academic IELTS as my English certification, and by 2023, I had taken it twice. However, I had the opportunity to participate in a three-month academic English course funded by the Manaaki Scholarship, and my admission to the university was conditional on passing this course. Once I completed it successfully, I was able to start the master’s program directly.

How Did I Prepare to Apply for the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship?

Since my university years, I have set the goal of studying for a master’s degree abroad on a fully funded scholarship. During those years, I constantly researched scholarship opportunities through websites and social media. After graduating, I focused on understanding the common requirements of fully funded scholarships. I decided to start by applying for less competitive national scholarships. During this process, I was awarded a scholarship for a leadership course.

Later, I began applying for scholarships that did not require English as a prerequisite while continuing to improve my language skills. I applied for a scholarship in Spain, but I wasn’t selected. As I continued learning about scholarships, I decided to invest in two mentorship sessions. The first was in 2019, when I learned about the Manaaki Scholarship and began working on strengthening my profile, always aligning my actions with my goals and motivations.

During the pandemic, many scholarships were suspended, so I dedicated myself to improving my English and actively participating in extracurricular activities. In 2022, when applications reopened, I took a second mentorship course to receive more personalized guidance and avoid making mistakes in my applications. As a result, when the Manaaki Scholarship opened again in 2023, I was fully prepared to apply.

What Made My Application Stand Out?

I believe what made my application strong was the consistency between my life goals and the professional and social activities I have undertaken. It’s important to be honest when expressing our intentions. Being guided by what I truly want has helped me earn recognition in my professional life, and socially, I’ve participated in both environmental volunteer work and political activities. For example, in 2022, I ran as a candidate for a public office position in my city. I’ve done everything with conviction and a clear sense of purpose, and I firmly believe that scholarships are tools to help us achieve our life goals.

What Would I Do Differently If I Had to Repeat the Process?

If I had to go through the process again, I would avoid comparing myself to others. I learned that every path is different—some people earn a scholarship within a few months, while others, like me, take several years. From the moment I learned about the Manaaki Scholarship in 2019 to finally receiving it in 2024, five years passed. And that’s okay, too.

What Advice Would You Give to Those Who Want to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice for those who want to apply for fully funded scholarships like Manaaki is to have a clear understanding of your true motivation and ensure it aligns with your long-term goals. Migrating abroad is a challenge, whether because of the language or the distance from home, so having a strong motivation is essential to stay grounded during difficult times.

It’s also important to thoroughly understand the terms and conditions of the scholarship. For instance, the Manaaki Scholarship requires me to return to my home country, Ecuador, after completing my studies. I’m grateful for this condition, as it allows me to apply everything I’ve learned in New Zealand to the country where I was born and raised.
