The Journey

Hi, my name is Niha, and I’m from Indonesia. I was awarded the Global Korea Scholarship in 2022. After completing a year of Korean language studies, I am now in the second year of my master’s degree in Wood and Paper Science. I also work as a full-time researcher in the Biomass Advanced Material Lab, focusing on paper science and advanced materials preparation. I am grateful to my professor for providing me with valuable opportunities to work on three different topics: utilizing biomass waste, recycling solvents, and analyzing sugars and organic acids in black liquor. Through these projects, I have gained significant experience, including contributing to paper publications. I hope my studies will make a positive impact on the environment and society.

Global Korea Scholarship Details

The Global Korea Scholarship is the top funding program in Korea, covering all expenses, including return flights, visa fees, tuition, language programs, living costs, insurance, and other necessities. This scholarship offers many quotas for different countries around the world.

There are two types of applications: embassy track and university track. The application process typically takes around 3–4 months before the final results are announced, and awardees are given the scholarship to move to Korea within the same year.

This scholarship is available for undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, research, and exchange programs.

Educational Background

I graduated in Chemistry in 2011 and have actively participated in research competitions since then. Some studies relevant to my master’s program include organic and inorganic chemistry, spectroscopy, physical chemistry, environmental chemistry, and analytical chemistry. In addition, I worked with various instruments for my thesis, including HPLC, UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, and BET.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for Kyungpook National University?

I learned about opportunities in Korea when I saw an advertisement on Telegram for an available Master-PhD integrated position from a professor here. I contacted him and researched his department and some of his work. When he suggested that I apply for the GKS scholarship through the university track, I prepared my application based on the scholarship requirements. I submitted all the necessary documents, including my conference paper and IELTS certificate (with a score of 7). I ended up being accepted at Kyungpook National University

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Global Korea Scholarship?

I familiarized myself with the scholarship guidelines before starting my preparations. Since the documents needed to be apostilled and sent directly to Korea, I ensured that all administrative requirements were met. Having applied for several scholarships before, I made improvements to my motivation letter and study plan. I conducted extensive research on bioenergy and its future applications. Additionally, I prepared myself for an interview with my future supervisor after completing the administrative procedures.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I realized that my engagement with my supervisor at that time helped my application stand out. When he saw my past projects involving various instruments, he was very open to giving me the opportunity to work in his laboratory. In addition, I submitted my IELTS certificate and included some publications I had worked on previously.

What Would You Have Done Differently If You Are Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would ensure that all the documents were correct to avoid resubmitting. In the past, I had to send my application three times to the university in Korea due to missing documents.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

I think the most important thing is to do thorough research on the university and program you’re applying to. Also, make sure your application fully complies with the GKS guidelines. Remember, nothing is easy at the beginning, but if we stay focused and consistent in our efforts, including applying for scholarships, it will pay off one day.

Thank You!
