The Journey

My name is Narmin Abbasova, and I come from Azerbaijan, a country where tradition and modernity intertwine seamlessly. Azerbaijan is not only my home but also a place of inspiration, where music, poetry, and hospitality form the essence of daily life. Growing up surrounded by this cultural richness taught me the value of resilience, creativity, and community. These qualities continue to shape my academic and professional journey. I am currently pursuing a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in European Business Law at Lund University in Lund, Sweden. My passion for law was shaped early on by Eleanor Roosevelt’s belief that human rights begin “in small places close to home”. Over time, I came to see law not just as a profession but as a bridge, one that can connect justice, dignity, and opportunity across communities.

Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals Details

I was honored to receive the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP) in 2024, a highly competitive and prestigious award with an acceptance rate of 4%. That year, SI received 8,167 applications, of which 5,804 candidates were admitted to eligible master’s programmes, a prerequisite for consideration, and ultimately, only 357 scholars were selected. The scholarship covers full tuition fees, living expenses, and travel grants, but its value goes far beyond financial support. It serves as a global network-building platform, bringing together changemakers who demonstrate leadership potential and a strong commitment to contributing positively to sustainable development in their home countries and beyond.

Educational Background

I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Law from Baku State University, the top-ranking university in Azerbaijan. During my studies, I developed a particular interest in commercial and European law, which laid the foundation for my future specialization. At the same time, I actively engaged in extracurricular activities. I held leadership positions in the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) in Azerbaijan, where I focused on empowering young lawyers and advancing legal education through volunteering. After completing my studies, I gained professional experience at the Azerbaijani Bar Association, where I worked on international cooperation, advocacy, and programs promoting gender equality in the legal profession. My strong academic foundation, combined with both leadership and professional experience, prepared me to pursue graduate-level education in Europe.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Lund University?

When exploring graduate programs, I focused on finding one that combined scholarly excellence with societal impact. Lund University stood out immediately. Founded in 1666, it is one of the world’s top universities, ranked #74 in the QS World University Rankings 2025, and its Faculty of Law is among the four original faculties with a long-standing tradition of excellence. The Master’s programme in European Business Law offers a comprehensive understanding of European foundational law and its application in business contexts, aligning perfectly with my academic background and future aspirations. I prepared for the application by carefully researching the program structure, attending webinars, and connecting with alumni. Since the program is taught in English, I took the IELTS exam in a rush after only a one-week self-study preparation. It was quite challenging, but I successfully completed it, which was a significant personal achievement in the application process.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals?

The SI Scholarship seeks individuals who demonstrate leadership, vision, and a commitment to creating meaningful change. To prepare my application, I spent significant time reflecting on my personal and professional journey, identifying moments where I had shown initiative, resilience, and responsibility. I highlighted not only my achievements but also the broader impact I aspired to make, illustrating how I could leverage the knowledge and skills gained from the program to empower communities, contribute to sustainable development, and bridge legal and societal gaps. I also emphasized my leadership roles in legal and academic organizations, showing how I had already applied these values in practice. By presenting a clear connection between my experiences, my ambitions, and my commitment to making a difference, I aimed to convey a story of purpose, resilience, and actionable impact that resonated with the scholarship’s mission.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

Authenticity and purpose. Rather than simply listing achievements, I focused on explaining why my experiences mattered and how they shaped my vision for the future. I emphasized the values, creativity, and resilience I have cultivated through my personal and professional journey, showing a genuine drive to use legal education not just for career advancement, but to create meaningful impact and contribute positively to society.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I could go through the process again, I would have been less stressed and trusted more in the power of consistent action. Preparing an application like this can feel overwhelming, but I’ve learned that dedication, focus, and perseverance always pay off. Believing in the process and in your own efforts is just as important as the work itself.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Be genuine and strategic at the same time. Scholarships like SISGP are not only about grades or CVs. They are about people with a mission. Show who you are, what shaped you, and how you will use this opportunity to give back. Focus on building a narrative that connects your background, achievements, and future goals, and most importantly, let your personal values shine through your application.
