The Journey

My name is Nainsi Chauhan, and I am from Mumbai, India. I was born into an economically weak family and raised in an orthodox society where girls are often expected to complete basic schooling and then get married. Dreams for higher education, especially studying abroad, were rarely encouraged.

But I had a dream. I wanted to study more, grow more, and create an identity of my own. I wanted to prove that a girl’s future should not be limited by society or financial background.

Today, I am pursuing my PhD in Chemical Engineering in the field of Biomaterials at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.
My journey from Mumbai to Manchester has not been easy, but it has been life-changing.

British Council Women in STEM Scholarship Details

I was awarded the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship from the University of Manchester.
This is a fully funded scholarship that covers:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Living expenses
  • IELTS examination fees
  • Two-way flight tickets
  • A reasonable stipend to live comfortably in the UK

For someone like me, this scholarship was not just financial support; it was hope, confidence, and a new beginning.

This scholarship is competitive; all over the world, only 5 women are chosen by the University of Manchester every year.

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry in 2016 with an 8.8 GPA. I then completed my Master’s in Organic Chemistry in 2018 with 8.6 CGPA and secured 1st Rank in my MSc.

In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, while searching for opportunities to study abroad, I worked as a Project Assistant (CSIR-JRF) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. It was a difficult time globally, but instead of giving up, I chose to gain research experience and strengthen my academic profile.

Later, I pursued an MSc in Biomaterials in the UK and am now continuing my journey with a PhD in Biomaterials.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Manchester?

I prepared my entire application and Statement of Purpose on my own, and by watching YouTube videos. I spent time understanding my goals, my strengths, and how my background shaped my ambition.

Writing my SOP was emotional because I reflected deeply on my struggles and dreams. I made sure my application honestly represented who I am.

How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and the University of Manchester?

I regularly checked university websites and searched online for scholarships supporting women in STEM. I stayed updated and applied fearlessly whenever I saw an opportunity.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare?

Yes, I took the IELTS exam and scored an overall band of 7.5. I prepared through YouTube videos and self-study. I did not take any coaching classes. I believed that with dedication and consistency, I could do it on my own.

What Was the Biggest Challenge in Your Journey?

The biggest challenge was financial limitations and societal expectations. There were moments when I felt completely hopeless. Studying abroad felt impossible because my family could not afford it. There were times when I thought of giving up.

The British Women in STEM Scholarship felt like my last hope. I was not even fully confident when I applied. But my inner voice told me to take the chance, and that one decision changed everything.

How Is Your Experience at the University of Manchester?

Studying in the UK transformed me personally and academically. It improved my communication skills, confidence, and independence. I overcame my fear of speaking to strangers and presenting my ideas.

Beyond academics, this journey shaped me into a stronger, braver woman.

What Made Your Application Stand Out?

  • Strong academic record
  • 1st Rank in Master’s
  • Research experience during COVID at IIT Bombay
  • Clear goals and strong determination despite challenges
Most importantly, my application carried my real story.

What Would You Have Done Differently?

If given another chance, I would apply for more scholarships earlier and explore even more opportunities.

What Advice Would You Give to Future Applicants?

If you come from a financially weak background or a society that limits women, do not give up. Believe in your dream even if no one else does at first. Apply even if you are scared. Prepare yourself if you cannot afford coaching. Take that one chance.

If I can reach here from where I started, then you can too. Just try to take your chance. My future goal is to inspire women in STEM, support girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and create platforms where women can live freely and pursue their dreams.

This scholarship was once my last hope. Today, it is my greatest achievement and my new beginning.
