The Journey

My name is Naik Muhammad, and I was born and raised as an Afghan refugee in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Growing up as a refugee, access to quality education was a significant challenge; however, I remained committed to my studies. I earned a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan. After completing my undergraduate degree, I had not initially planned to pursue a master’s degree, but that changed when I came across a scholarship opportunity that completely shifted my academic path.

DAAD Scholarship Details

I was awarded a fully funded DAAD scholarship specifically for Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan. The scholarship is administered by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and provides a monthly stipend of135, which covers accommodation, stationery, and other academic expenses. A portion of the stipend is also allocated to HEC for organizing extracurricular activities for students. I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Computer Networks Security at FAST NUCES Islamabad, Campus, through this scholarship.

Educational Background

I completed my Master of Science in Computer Sciences, specializing in Networking, from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan. This academic background provided me with a solid understanding of development challenges and project-based interventions, which naturally shaped my interest in Computer Networking Security. Although I do not have my GPA readily available, my sustained academic commitment and strong motivation for learning have adequately prepared me for graduate-level studies.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to FAST NUCES?

The opportunity to apply for the DAAD scholarship came unexpectedly. A close friend of mine, Mansoor Rahimi, who is currently in Germany as a DAAD scholar, informed me about the program and encouraged me to apply. Around the same time, while browsing the HEC Site, I came across the official DAAD scholarship announcement. After thoroughly reviewing the eligibility criteria and confirming that I met all the requirements, I proceeded with the application process. This included carefully completing the application form and preparing a detailed motivation letter highlighting my academic background, career goals, and commitment to contributing to development-oriented projects.

Instead of applying to multiple universities, I intentionally chose the FAST NUVES Islamabad Campus as my preferred institution. I was well aware of the quality of education, the expertise of the faculty, and the institution’s strong focus on practical and research-based learning. This familiarity gave me confidence in FAST NUCES Islamabad Campus.

How Did You Find Information About the DAAD Scholarship and FAST NUCES?

This scholarship did not require international standardized tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, or the GRE. Instead, the selection process emphasized applicants’ academic background, motivation, and performance in the interview. For guidance and updates, I relied primarily on social media, particularly Facebook, as well as the official websites of DAAD and the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD Scholarship?

After discovering the scholarship, I carefully reviewed all the eligibility criteria and gathered the required documents. A major focus was writing my motivation letter, where I highlighted my academic journey, experiences, and my reasons for pursuing a master’s in Computer Network Security. A few days later, I was invited by HEC for an interview, which included representatives from both Germany and HEC. Out of many applicants, only 200 were selected, and I was fortunate to be among them.

How is Your Experience at NUCES?

My time at the University of Peshawar has been extremely positive. The faculty members are knowledgeable and supportive, and the academic environment is both challenging and collaborative as well.

How Does NUCES Support International Students?

Even as an Afghan refugee, I have always felt welcomed and supported. The institute regularly organizes workshops, counseling sessions, and extracurricular activities to help students adjust, thrive, and succeed in their studies.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or the Country's Native Language?

All of my classes are taught in English, which is the official medium of instruction at the University of Peshawar, Pakistan.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my unique background, personal story, and clear motivation to contribute to the development sector through Computer Network Security made my application strong. Additionally, I ensured my motivation letter was authentic and closely aligned with the scholarship’s objectives.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I could do it again, I would begin preparing earlier, research more scholarship options, and perhaps apply to several international programs. Overall, though, I am grateful for the outcome and the experience.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice is straightforward: carefully read the eligibility requirements, prepare your documents meticulously, and don’t hesitate to apply. Rejections are a natural part of the process. Stay persistent and optimistic, and the right opportunity will eventually come your way.
