The Journey
Hello, my name is Mustefa Geda Bamuda, and I am originally from Shashemene, Ethiopia. I grew up in Addis Ababa, where I lived until recently, and now I am pursuing my Master’s in Dispute Resolution at Independent College in Dublin, Ireland. I am passionate about making a positive impact in my community and the world, and that passion led me to study dispute resolution, an area that resonates deeply with my background in healthcare, pharmacy, and community leadership.
My journey to this point has been shaped by over eight years of work experience in Ethiopia, particularly in the health sector, where I have been involved in various community-driven peacebuilding efforts since 2015. These efforts have not only strengthened my leadership but also fueled my dedication to conflict resolution and community development. It was this drive that led me to pursue further education in the field of dispute resolution.
GOI-IES Scholarship Details
I am incredibly honored to have been selected as a recipient of the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) for the 2024/2025 academic year. The scholarship covers a substantial portion of my tuition and living expenses, giving me the opportunity to pursue my studies here in Ireland without financial worries. I am deeply thankful to the Government of Ireland for selecting me through a highly competitive process.
I must also mention the invaluable support I have received from Independent College Dublin. The resources, excellent faculty, and an inclusive academic environment have been instrumental in shaping my experience here.
Educational Background
I completed my Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at Gondar University, Ethiopia, graduating in 2015. My education laid a strong foundation for my work in Ethiopia's healthcare system, where I encountered numerous community challenges. This background in healthcare provided me with a unique lens through which to view the social issues in my country, and I have always believed in the power of education to create lasting change.
Despite my health-related background, my passion for resolving disputes among local communities led me to volunteer extensively in peacebuilding activities. In 2023, I organized a free workshop in my village to address ethnic conflicts, an effort that highlighted the importance of mediation and reconciliation in achieving lasting peace.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Institutions?
I began my research into study programs abroad several years ago. I knew I wanted to further my education in a field that could allow me to resolve conflicts in my home country, and after some research, I found that Independent College offered the Master’s program in Dispute Resolution. The course’s focus on practical learning and its comprehensive curriculum drew me in, and I knew it was the perfect fit for my goals.
For the application process, I focused on gathering all necessary documents, including my academic records, work experience, and volunteer activities, as well as my scholarship essay. I made sure to demonstrate how my background and passion for conflict resolution aligned with the program’s goals.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the GOI-IES Scholarship?
The scholarship application process was competitive, but I approached it systematically. I filled out the application carefully, making sure to include all relevant academic qualifications, work experience, and extracurricular activities. I also highlighted my contributions to community peacebuilding in Ethiopia, as well as the leadership skills I developed through my voluntary efforts.
One of the key aspects that helped my application stand out was the clarity and specificity of my essay responses. I made sure to answer each question with precision, reflecting on my past experiences, my future aspirations, and how the scholarship would help me achieve my goals. I used the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) approach in my essays to showcase how my ambitions were grounded in concrete, achievable steps.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out because I was able to demonstrate a clear link between my personal background, professional experience, and the scholarship’s objectives. My dedication to peacebuilding, coupled with my experience in healthcare, allowed me to present a unique perspective on how dispute resolution can address community problems. I made sure that my essay was not only reflective of my experiences but also highlighted how I
could use the education I would gain to create positive change.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Looking back, I feel confident about the way I approached the application process. However, if I were to do it again, I would have given myself more time to refine my essays. The process is highly competitive, and a few extra days to polish my answers would have allowed me to make an even stronger impression.
