The Journey

Hi! My name is Munkh-Erdene Munkhbat, and I am from Mongolia. I entered Seoul National University in the spring semester of 2023, which began on March 1st. I am currently studying Civil and Environmental Engineering. Since I was a kid, I have always been fascinated by buildings and cities, which motivated me to pursue this degree.

Samsung Global Hope Scholarship Details

I received the Global Hope Scholarship from the Samsung Dream Foundation for my undergraduate studies at Seoul National University (SNU). This scholarship fully waives tuition fees at SNU and provides a living allowance. As of 2025, it covers 100% of tuition and living expenses (₩800,000 KRW ≈ $580 USD per month). Undergraduate students can receive the scholarship for up to 8 semesters (a 4-year degree), provided they maintain a GPA above 2.7/4.3 each semester. Depending on the university in Korea, the scholarship benefits may vary, as not all institutions waive tuition when accepting Samsung’s Global Hope Scholarship.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

Yes. Once you are admitted to SNU, there are various scholarships and grants available for full-time international students. For example, I received a ₩1,500,000 KRW (≈ $1,085 USD) grant from the Korea–Mongolia Foundation to support the future Korea–Mongolia relationship. I also learned that there are similar grants for other countries, such as Korea and Malaysia. In my junior year, I participated in a work-study scholarship on campus. Students can work in places such as the library or the International Student Services desk, earning about ₩10,000 KRW (≈ $7–8 USD) per hour. I worked 40 hours a month, which came to about ₩400,000 KRW (≈ $290 USD).

Educational Background

Since this is my undergraduate degree, my previous education was high school. I graduated from the High School of Science and Technology of Mongolia with a GPA of 99.6/100.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Seoul National University?

How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and Institutions?

As an international student in Korea, most scholarship and admission details are available on the websites of your intended universities. For example, SNU offers two types of scholarships:

Before admission scholarships (e.g., Global Korea Scholarship – GKS), you apply for the scholarship first and then to the university.

After admission, scholarships (e.g., Samsung Global Hope Scholarship), which you apply for after being admitted to SNU.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Standardized Tests: I submitted a 7.5 IELTS score and a TOPIK Level 6 certificate (Korean language proficiency test) after high school for my SNU application.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Scholarship(s)?

The scholarship process has two rounds.

First round: Applicants must submit a recommendation letter (from a teacher, advisor, counselor, or professor who can speak about their academic goals and motivation), personal statements, and answers to foundation questions through the university’s international office. I drafted my essays and asked teachers and friends to review them.

Second round: This consists of an interview and a written test at the Samsung Dream Foundation office. Since I didn’t know what kind of questions might appear in the writing task, I practiced by writing short essays on the “100 most popular topics” within time limits to improve my speed and clarity.

How Is (was) Your Experience at Seoul National University?

I enjoy SNU’s campus because it is large, close to the mountains, and filled with activities almost every day. As one of the biggest campuses in Seoul, it provides great opportunities such as exchange programs and international internships.

How Do You Rate Seoul National University Academically and Why?

Academically, SNU is the top university in South Korea and is recognized as one of the leading research institutions in the world. Because many professors are top experts in their disciplines, students benefit from unique opportunities to learn at the highest level.

How Does Seoul National University Support International Students?

SNU offers support through organizations like SISA (International Students Association) and SNU Buddy (for exchange students). Additionally, there are numerous scholarships available for international students once they are admitted.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?

Most classes at SNU are officially taught in Korean, though a smaller number are offered in English. Availability also depends on the department. For example, Business and Computer Science have more English-based classes, while in Civil and Environmental Engineering, I would estimate around 30-40% of courses are taught in English.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Korean?

Yes. While professors can sometimes provide exams in English upon request, Korean proficiency is essential for long-term success in academics. Beyond coursework, most student clubs and campus activities are conducted in Korean, so knowledge of the language is necessary for a full experience.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my personal statement was the key. I clearly explained my short- and long-term goals, why I chose this major, and how the scholarship would help me achieve them. During the interview, I emphasized these points further, showing how my goals align with the scholarship’s vision.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Explore your options: Korea has many scholarships—start early and gather information.

Learn about the foundation: Understand the scholarship’s values and goals. Reading alumni stories, articles, or even podcasts can help you connect with their mission.

Be clear about your goals: You don’t need to have your entire future planned, but structured goals make your application more convincing. This also shows the committee how the scholarship can support not only your personal growth but also your contributions to your community.
