How Does the Aalto University Support International Students?

Aalto University offers comprehensive support for international students, making the transition to studying and living in Finland smooth and welcoming. From the moment of admission, students receive guidance through the International Student Guide, which covers essential topics like residence permits, housing, healthcare, and academic registration.

One of the standout services is the International Student Peer Advice (ISPA) program. This initiative connects new international students with current international Aalto students who offer peer support and practical advice on settling in Finland. They help with everything from navigating public transport and healthcare to understanding tuition fees and student benefits.

Aalto also runs the Study and Stay Program, which supports international students in building careers in Finland. It includes workshops, mentoring, employer events, and career coaching to help students integrate into the Finnish job market and professional culture.

Overall, Aalto University provides a well-rounded support system that goes beyond academics, helping international students feel at home and succeed both during and after their studies.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Finnish?

All of my classes at Aalto University were conducted in English. As an international student enrolled in a master’s program, English was the official language of instruction for all courses, lectures, assignments, and exams. This made it easy to follow the curriculum and engage fully in academic discussions, regardless of not speaking Finnish. Aalto has a strong international focus, and many of its master’s programs are specifically designed to accommodate students from around the world.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Finnish?

Not at all. At Aalto University, international master’s programs are fully taught in English, and all academic activities, including lectures, assignments, exams, and communication with faculty, are conducted in English. As an international student, I never faced any academic challenges due to not knowing Finnish.

While learning the local language can be helpful for daily life and social integration, it’s not a requirement for succeeding academically. Aalto also offers Finnish language courses for international students who are interested, but these are optional and not tied to academic performance.

Overall, students can thrive academically at Aalto without knowing Finnish, thanks to the university’s strong international orientation and support systems.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe several factors contributed to making my application stand out. First, my strong academic background, graduating with a GPA of 3.69/4.00 in Electrical Engineering from NED University, demonstrated consistent performance and a solid foundation in power systems. I also had relevant industry experience in Pakistan, which showed that I could apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings.

Lastly, I took time to thoroughly research the university and its values, and tailored my application accordingly. I believe this level of preparation, combined with my academic merit, helped me secure admission and the Aalto University Scholarship, which covered 100% of my tuition fees.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would start my preparation earlier and spend more time tailoring each part of my application, especially the motivation letter, to better reflect my long-term goals and how they align with the program. While I did thorough research, I believe I could have reached out to current students or alumni to gain deeper insights into the academic environment and career opportunities after graduation.

I also would have explored more scholarship options beyond the university’s own offering, including external funding sources, to broaden my chances. Additionally, I would have taken more time to prepare for the IELTS exam, not just to meet the requirement but to aim for a higher score that could strengthen my overall profile.

Overall, the process went well, but with more proactive networking and earlier planning, I could have made it even smoother and more strategic.
