The Journey
My name is Mohamed Elmokhtar Mohamed Vall, and I am from Mauritania, a country in North Africa. With a Master’s degree in Energy Engineering from the National School of Engineering of Monastir in Tunisia, I set my sights on an ambitious goal: applying for the prestigious Chevening Scholarship. Applying for such a highly competitive program (with an acceptance rate of just 2–3%) was a risky step, especially considering that English is my third language. However, I was determined to take the risk and pursue my dreams.
Chevening Scholarship Details
Chevening is a fully funded scholarship awarded by the Foreign, Commonwealth, & Development Office (FCDO) and partner organizations. Its global reach and reputation make it one of the most prestigious scholarships worldwide. With over 60,000 alumni, including 20 current or former heads of state or government, Chevening offers exceptional networking opportunities.
I was fortunate to secure my first choice program: a Master’s in Oil and Gas Enterprise Management at the University of Aberdeen.
If given the choice again, I would undoubtedly choose Chevening for the incredible global network it offers, a resource that continues to inspire and connect scholars long after graduation.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the University of Aberdeen?
When selecting universities, I began by identifying seven institutions offering programs aligned with my interests. I considered factors such as rankings, cost of living, and overall reputation. Gradually, I narrowed my options down to three:
- Top Choice: Highly ranked and prestigious.
- Mid-Ranked: A balanced option.
- Safety Option: Lower-ranked with a minimum IELTS requirement.
This strategy ensured that I would secure an offer in case of unforeseen challenges. Chevening requires an unconditional offer from a university by July (If not you lose the scholarship), so having a backup plan was essential.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the IELTS?
To meet the scholarship’s English proficiency requirements, I allocated 3–4 weeks to prepare for the IELTS exam. My key tips for success:
- Ensure you have at least an intermediate to upper-intermediate level of English.
- Familiarize yourself with the exam format.
- Practice extensively. Even if your English is strong, understanding the test structure is crucial. As the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” Consistent preparation was the cornerstone of my success.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?
I began my application process early, starting in September. My preparation involved three key steps:
- Research: I thoroughly explored the Chevening website and watched videos to understand the program and its requirements.
- Essay Writing: I prioritized crafting compelling essays, as these form the backbone of the application. Feedback from Chevening alumni was invaluable in refining my drafts.
- Interview Preparation: I reviewed my essays, ensuring I could confidently discuss every detail during the interview. I also watched alumni videos to gather practical tips.
What Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my success was due to the following:
- A clear understanding of what Chevening looks for in applicants.
- Well-written essays that effectively conveyed my vision and aspirations.
- Confidence and authenticity during the interview, supported by a professional appearance.
These tips helped me stand out and secure a spot among the 1,339 selected from more than 67,000 applicants in the 2023-2024 cycle.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would follow the same principles:
- Research: Deeply understand the program and its requirements.
- Preparation: Leave no stone unturned in the application and interview stages.
- Confidence: Trust in your abilities and stay true to yourself.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
For those considering a scholarship like Chevening, here are my five key tips:
- Research Extensively: Know the program and its expectations.
- Prepare for the Interview: Conduct mock interviews with Chevening Alumni to build confidence.
- Practice for IELTS: Familiarize yourself with the exam format.
- Be Confident: Show authenticity and self-assurance throughout the process.
Chevening is more than a scholarship—it’s a life-changing opportunity that connects you to a global network of leaders and innovators. If you approach the process with determination, preparation, and confidence, the possibilities are endless.
