How an Indian Organic Chemistry Graduate Secured the Fully Funded GKS Scholarship to Pursue a Ph.D. at Pusan National University, South Korea
University: Pusan National University
Degree: Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry
Previous Education: Master’s in Organic Chemistry, Central University (India)
Scholarship: Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) – Fully Funded

The Journey
I am Meenakshi from India. I have completed my Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry from a Central University in India. Currently, I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at Pusan National University, Busan, South Korea. From a young age, I’ve been fascinated by science, and over the years, my passion for chemistry only deepened. After completing my master's, I wanted to contribute to the research field, particularly by exploring alternatives to harmful substances that adversely affect the environment. This led me to focus on developing energy-efficient technologies with a minimal environmental footprint. As part of my current research, I am working in a synthetic polymer chemistry lab in South Korea, designing molecules for the emissive layer of Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs).
Global Korea Scholarship Details
In 2023, I was fortunate enough to receive the prestigious Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) and was selected for a doctoral program at Pusan National University. This fully funded scholarship covers my round-trip airfare, visa fee, tuition, and a generous stipend to cover living expenses. One of the most rewarding aspects of this scholarship is the opportunity to immerse myself in Korean culture through a year-long language program, which not only enhances my academic experience but also allows me to experience the vibrant culture of South Korea.
The GKS offers two application tracks: the University Track and the Embassy Track. I applied through the Embassy Track, which includes a rigorous selection process involving document screening, an interview at the embassy, document verification by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED), and finally, a university interview. A key advantage of the Embassy Track is the ability to apply to up to three universities simultaneously, which increases your chances of being selected.
Educational Background
I’ve completed my master’s degree with a CGPA of 9.0 from a Central University in India, which strengthened my application and gave me a competitive edge. Additionally, I qualified for the GATE exam, a national-level examination in India, which further bolstered my academic credentials. As my focus was on organic chemistry, transitioning into a Ph.D. program in the same field was seamless.
How I Prepared to Apply to Pusan National University
Coming from humble beginnings, I faced financial constraints, especially when it came to language exams like IELTS or TOEFL, which can be quite expensive. Thankfully, these exams were not mandatory for the GKS application. Instead, my selection was based on my academic achievements, personal statement, and study plan. I also made sure to highlight my extracurricular activities and volunteering experience, which helped differentiate my profile from other applicants.
How I Prepared to Apply for the Scholarship
To gain a comprehensive understanding of the GKS, I invested considerable time researching multiple websites and watching YouTube videos about the experiences of other scholars. These success stories were a major source of inspiration and motivation. When preparing my application, I prioritized organizing all the required documents well in advance and dedicated significant effort to crafting an authentic and sincere personal statement. My study plan focused on realistic goals that are achievable by most students, ensuring that it was both practical and compelling. Additionally, I thoroughly prepared for the interview by reviewing common questions and preparing thoughtful answers.
What Made My Application Stand Out
In my opinion, the key elements that made my application stand out were my personal statement and study plan. These documents were tailored to reflect my genuine aspirations and research goals. I also believe that my strong academic record, including my performance in the GATE exam, along with my diverse non-academic contributions, strengthened my application. Furthermore, my master’s degree from a prestigious Central University helped to enhance my profile.
What I Would Have Done Differently
If I were to go through the process again, I would focus on contacting professors before the application period begins. Establishing early communication with a potential supervisor and securing a letter of recommendation can significantly strengthen your application.
Advice for Aspiring Applicants
My advice for anyone considering applying for a similar scholarship is to trust in your unique qualities and not compare yourself to others. The scholarship application process can be daunting, but remember, it’s about your journey and your goals. Stay true to your passion, and don’t try to mold your application based on what others are doing. Everyone’s path is different, and comparing yourself to others can only hold you back. Focus on your unique strengths, experiences, and aspirations. Success is about presenting your true self, your potential, and your commitment to your field. Stay motivated, do thorough research, and ensure your application is complete and well-prepared. Most importantly, believe in your abilities and take the process one step at a time.
