The Journey

My name is May Myint Myat, and I am originally from Myanmar. I am currently in the final semester of my master’s program in environmental science and engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in South Korea. My research focuses on air pollution, especially particulate matter (tiny particles), as well as other key pollutants such as ozone and their associated health impacts.

I studied Chemistry during my undergraduate degree and later worked at an education and technology company, supporting the creation of science‑learning applications. Because of my interest in environmental science and sustainability, I have continuously looked for opportunities to expand my knowledge and gain experience. While working, I attended short courses such as Science and Technology for a Sustainable World and Doing Research. These experiences motivated me to continue my studies and pursue a master’s degree.

Global Korea Scholarship Details

I received the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) through the university track. There are two application tracks for GKS: the university track and the embassy track. I chose the university track because, at the time of application, I was not in my home country.

I submitted my application in March 2023. The university result was announced in late April 2023, and the final result from NIIED was released around June 2023, as I recall.

The scholarship was fully funded, covering tuition and a monthly stipend. However, applicants should always check the most recent GKS guidelines, as the scholarship policy can change over time.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

I was shortlisted for the POSCO scholarship; however, I chose not to proceed after receiving the GKS offer.

Educational Background

I hold a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemistry with a GPA of 4.77. My undergraduate studies provided me with a foundation in scientific thinking, analytical skills, and laboratory experience.

Although my master’s program is interdisciplinary rather than purely chemistry-based, my extracurricular activities, additional training, and professional experience in education technology prepared me well to transition into environmental science.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to POSTECH?

Planning ahead was essential. Because physical documents had to be mailed internationally, I prepared my materials early, especially considering that government document processing in my country can be time-consuming.

I contacted my academic referees and the prospective supervising professor approximately three to four months in advance. Throughout the process, I remained highly responsive via email and promptly submitted any additional documents when requested. I am truly grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey.

How Did You Find Information About the GKS Scholarship and POSTECH?

I had long dreamed of studying abroad. Before applying for GKS, I initially applied to one university in South Korea through a professor-based opportunity. At that time, the professor encouraged me to consider the GKS program, which was when I first learned about the scholarship.

While beginning my professional career, I continuously searched for scholarship opportunities. I followed social media groups that share scholarship information, but always verified details through official scholarship and university websites. I carefully reviewed all science and engineering programs under GKS, compared curricula, and checked university rankings. After thorough consideration, I chose POSTECH.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I took the TOEIC test as part of my language preparation.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the GKS Scholarship?

After passing the university screening stage, the final evaluation was conducted by NIIED. The most important strategy I followed was reading the guidelines extremely carefully and strictly adhering to all instructions, including formatting, document order, and notarization requirements.

In addition, I prepared labeled title stickers for each document so that my application would be easy to navigate despite the large volume of materials. I also prepared extra copies of key documents in advance in case of sudden requests. Although my language certificate was not the strongest component, I focused on strengthening my academic profile, professional experience in educational technology, and clearly articulating my study plan and future contribution. Having a clear vision of both my past contributions and future goals was very helpful.

How Does POSTECH Support International Students?

POSTECH primarily focuses on science and engineering research and does not host the GKS language program on campus. As a GKS scholar, I completed my Korean language training at Sungshin Women’s University, where I met many supportive and wonderful friends.

POSTECH provides strong academic support through academic advising, excellent library facilities, affordable campus dining, and counseling services. For students interested in interdisciplinary research, POSTECH also offers the AI-Environment diploma program.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?

One of the main reasons I chose POSTECH is that courses in my department are conducted in English.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing Korean?

At POSTECH, the primary requirement is English proficiency, and most courses are taught in English. Academically, students can manage well without the Korean language. However, learning basic Korean is still highly beneficial for daily life and social interactions in Korea.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

Reflecting on my journey, I believe my application stood out due to my consistency, strong motivation for growth, and clear academic direction. My interdisciplinary background, professional experience in educational technology, and detailed study and future plans likely demonstrated both my readiness and long-term commitment.

In addition, strong recommendation letters and prior communication with the prospective professor may have further strengthened my application.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Looking back, I believe I prepared as thoroughly as possible. However, if I could go through the process again, I would invest even more effort into strengthening my language proficiency alongside my academic preparation.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

I strongly encourage future applicants to contact prospective professors, current international students, and senior lab members before applying. These conversations provide valuable insights about the institution that are often not visible on official websites.

Once you finalize your target university and program, develop a detailed study plan with a clear timeline, including:

  • pre-arrival preparation,
  • language training period,
  • each semester of your master’s program, and
  • your long-term future goals.

This demonstrates strong planning ability, commitment, and clarity of purpose.

Finally, surround yourself with peers who share similar ambitions. The GKS document process can be complex, and mutual support among applicants can be extremely helpful throughout the journey.
