The Journey
My name is Martha Jessica Munthali. I am from Malawi, and I am 26 years old. I am a proud recipient of the Manaaki New Zealand Government Scholarship.
My academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Development, which I completed with a credit. To be honest, becoming a lawyer was my original dream, but life had other plans after secondary school, and I ended up studying something I hadn’t quite planned for. That said, International Relations and Development grew on me. It became something I truly loved, especially once I began learning about the fascinating complexities of international development.
Eventually, I decided to pursue a Master of Public Policy because I wanted something that could tie all my interests together. I didn’t want to be boxed into one specialisation; I wanted to stretch out and learn more about everything that influences society.
Manaaki New Zealand Government Scholarship Details
The Manaaki New Zealand Government scholarship covers full tuition, living expenses, and other essential costs, which has made it possible for me to focus completely on my studies and personal growth. The most unique thing about this scholarship and New Zealand in general is its emphasis on well-being. It is part of the many values that New Zealanders value, and it has made my Master's journey enjoyable.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Auckland?
The Manaaki scholarship has its own process. You actually apply for the scholarship first, and if you’re successful, you apply to your university of choice. After receiving the scholarship offer, I applied to the University of Auckland and the Auckland University of Technology. I was eventually offered admission to UoA. Part of the university application included taking an English language test, and in my case, IELTS.
Preparing for IELTS was intense, especially because I had a short window to prepare. I watched countless YouTube tutorials, practised with sample tests, and really immersed myself in each component of the exam (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). It did not feel like a burden; maybe because I enjoy exams (lol), but I genuinely liked the practice sessions.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Manaaki New Zealand Government Scholarship?
The application had multiple stages. I had to gather all my documents, transcripts, recommendation letters, and anything else that was required. I made sure everything matched and was in order because one small mismatch can cost you the whole application.
I also made sure to connect with others who had gone through the process. I joined Facebook groups where past or current scholars shared their experiences. That support network helped me feel less alone and more informed throughout the process.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I think it was my authenticity and the fact that I treated the interview like a genuine conversation. I was not trying to impress anyone; I was simply sharing my intentions and my desire to grow my career through this opportunity. The interviewers were kind and welcoming, which helped me open up and be myself.
What Would You Have Done Differently If You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Even though I got the scholarship, I feel like I could’ve done better in some areas. I would have paid closer attention to the instructions and made sure I provided exactly what was asked for, no substitutions. If the application says, “Submit Document A,” then give them Document A, not something similar. It’s a small thing that can make a huge difference.
What Advice Would You Give to Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Put your best foot forward and be prepared. Make sure your information is consistent across all your documents and give yourself enough time to gather everything you need. If you don’t make it on your first try, do not give up. I didn’t get the first scholarship I applied for (not even the second lol), but I kept going. Keep looking for opportunities, keep refining your applications and believe that what’s meant for you won’t pass you by.
