The Journey
My name is Mahnoor Sheikh, and I am from Karachi, Pakistan. I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Data Science at Michigan State University. This 2-year program combines foundational courses in statistics and data analysis with advanced electives in machine learning and statistics, culminating in a capstone project that offers industry experience. The coursework balances theoretical and practical skills. My undergraduate studies and work experience equipped me with diverse skills in economic analysis, data visualization, and statistical techniques. However, I chose to further my education in data science to deepen my expertise and achieve my long-term goal of becoming an economic data scientist.
Fulbright Scholarship Details
I’ve been honored to receive the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, a fully funded international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. The scholarship supports my two-year master’s program, covering tuition, health insurance, living expenses, airfare, and other necessary costs for studying in the U.S. Additionally, I’ve been awarded a full tuition scholarship from Michigan State University.
Educational Background
I earned my undergraduate degree in Economics and Mathematics from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), one of Pakistan’s top business schools. I maintained a spot on the Dean’s List every semester and graduated at the top of my class in 2022, receiving a bronze medal with a CGPA of 3.73/4.0. My coursework heavily involved data analysis, including regression analysis, Python and R programming, and data visualization. What pivoted me in the direction of data science, specifically, however, was the course ‘Foundations of Data Science,’ where I was introduced to machine learning algorithms for solving classification and prediction problems. This experience solidified my interest in pursuing data science as a career.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Michigan State University?
I listed four universities and programs based on their curriculum and course offerings, and Fulbright made the final submission plan based on my choices. The Fulbright program managed the university application process on my behalf, utilizing my personal statement and study objective from the scholarship application. Any additional requirements, like essays or references, were communicated to me, which I wrote accordingly.
For the Fulbright application, I submitted GRE scores. I prepared for the GRE over two months using GregMat, ETS PowerPrep Plus practice tests, and Magoosh Vocabulary, achieving a score of 316. After selection, I took the TOEFL, preparing solely with the official guide and scoring 110.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?
The key components of the Fulbright application are the personal statement, study objective, and letters of reference. These write-ups are crucial for success, so I focused on crafting impactful write-ups.
For the study objective, I outlined my short- and long-term career plans, my academic and professional preparation for data science, the value addition the degree would provide, and how I intend to contribute to my home country upon returning.
In comparison, the personal statement highlighted my motivation, accomplishments, and personal growth, presented in a creative and compelling way.
For the letters of reference, my econometrics professor, data visualization professor, and work manager each wrote a recommendation that showcased my academic and professional strengths.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
Two aspects made my application stand out: my strong academic record combined with relevant work experience, and the clarity of my goals, as articulated in my study objective.
What Would You Have Done Differently If You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would prepare more thoroughly for the interview. While I anticipated questions based on my written application, the panel asked unexpected questions that threw me off momentarily. However, I stayed confident and composed throughout the interview.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Understand the purpose of the scholarship and tailor your application to align with it. For Fulbright, cultural exchange is a core element, and I made sure to emphasize this in my application and interview. For any scholarship, highlighting how you embody its mission will increase your chances of success.
