The Journey

Hi, I am Maham Maqsood from Pakistan, and I was selected for Türkiye Bursları in 2021. I hold a Bachelor’s and Master's in Biochemistry. I was always curious about science and had found an interest in biological sciences in high school. I aspired to become a scientist in a lab and decided to pursue higher education in this field.

Türkiye Bursları awarded me a scholarship for my Master’s studies at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. This scholarship is an incredible opportunity, covering tuition fees at prestigious universities in Türkiye, visa and ticket expenses, and a monthly stipend for living costs.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Middle East Technical University?

I noticed that the program I wanted to get into required IELTS and GRE. To assess my initial standing, I took a mock test on the official website. My scores were average at first, but since it was during COVID and I had plenty of free time, I dedicated myself to thorough preparation. I used learning manuals, books, and online resources to improve my skills. I also took mock tests regularly (which helped build stamina for the hours-long exams). I scored 8.0 in IELTS and 309 in GRE.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Türkiye Scholarships Burslari  Scholarship?

First and foremost, I checked the eligibility criteria and ensured that my profile highlighted the qualities they were looking for in a candidate. I refined my resume and, most importantly, my motivation letter. At the time, I was applying for multiple positions and scholarships, so I continuously revised and tailored my motivation letter accordingly. That practice really helped!

I also thoroughly researched schools and programs relevant to my interests. In my application, I highlighted why I was a strong fit for the scholarship program. I made sure to include experiences and achievements that made my profile unique. Moreover, I closely followed the application timeline and ensured all required materials were prepared well in advance to avoid last-minute stress and problems.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my extensive co-curricular and volunteer activities, as well as work experience, significantly strengthened my application. Additionally, I thoroughly prepared for the aptitude tests and landed good scores, which helped me secure admission to my school of choice.

My prior research experience during my bachelor's studies also made a huge difference. In my application, I clearly linked my past research work to my aspirations for a Master’s degree and outlined the type of research I hoped to pursue. While the research proposal in the application doesn’t have to be final, demonstrating a clear vision and enthusiasm can make a strong impression.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would also focus on networking and reaching out to past applicants and alumni. Alumni networks are incredibly valuable. The guidance and practical advice can make a significant difference.

Recently, an applicant reached out to me for a recommendation, and I learned that for Türkiye Bursları, applicants can request recommendations from alumni as well. As alumni, we have access to the alumni portal, and I was more than happy to provide her with a recommendation letter. This is a resource that applicants should definitely take advantage of!

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Just stay comfortable and be honest in sharing your story. Prepare your application very carefully; your letter and profile should highlight not just your education but also your skills and experiences. Research the institutions, professors, and labs relevant to your field, especially if you’re applying for a research degree. If you’re selected for an interview, review your application to identify key strengths you can emphasize. Practice with mock interviews to boost your confidence. Most importantly, enjoy the process. It’s definitely a valuable learning experience!
