The Journey
I am Lt Cdr Bidisha Pandey, a Naval veteran and Commonwealth Scholar, who transitioned from a decade-long career in the Indian Navy to international trade and diplomacy. I pursued MSc Prosperity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship at University College London (UCL), supported by the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship jointly funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and UCL. My decision to study in this field stemmed from a desire to apply my leadership experience and problem-solving mindset from the defence services to broader developmental and economic contexts. The program aligned perfectly with my long-term vision of contributing to national and global prosperity through innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive growth.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Details
I received the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, jointly funded by UCL and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). The award covered my full tuition fee, round-trip airfare to the UK, monthly living stipend, and a few additional allowances. This generous support allowed me to focus fully on academics and professional development, without financial constraints. It also offered an enriching community of global scholars working across diverse fields, creating a lifelong network of changemakers from across the globe.
Educational Background
I completed my bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering in 2011, followed by the Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala. My technical background, combined with rigorous military training, honed my analytical, leadership, and problem-solving skills - all of which shaped my academic readiness and discipline for postgraduate study. The combination of engineering and military experience gave me a unique perspective, blending precision with adaptability, which later helped me thrive in UCL’s multidisciplinary environment.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to University College London?
I took the IELTS to meet the language requirements and began researching suitable programs nearly two years before applying. GMAT/GRE was not mandatory for my program. Conversations with previous scholars and LinkedIn networking played a vital role in understanding the nuances of the process. Being the first from the Indian Armed Forces to secure a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, I didn’t have a ready template to follow - I had to rely on my logic, reflection, and authenticity to shape compelling essays. My approach was structured: identify the right fit, align personal goals with institutional ethos, and ensure every essay reflected clarity of purpose and real-world impact.
How is (was) Your Experience at University College London?
UCL is one of the most international student-friendly universities in the world. From the day I arrived, I never felt like an outsider. The academic staff and administrative teams were supportive, and the community was inclusive. The classes were conducted entirely in English, and the university offered extensive academic resources, mentorship programs, and career support tailored for international students. This supportive environment played a key role in ensuring that my transition from military service to academia was seamless and rewarding.
How Do You Rate University College London Academically and Why?
I would rate University College London (UCL) among the top global institutions for its academic excellence, interdisciplinary approach, and commitment to innovation-driven learning. Consistently ranked among the world’s top 10 universities by QS World Rankings, UCL stands out not only for the quality of its faculty and research but also for its focus on real-world impact. The academic environment fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and collaboration across disciplines, qualities that are essential in an increasingly interconnected world. UCL’s alumni network speaks volumes about its academic prestige. The spirit of independent thought and global leadership that defines UCL continues to inspire students to challenge conventions and create change.
For me, studying at UCL was both intellectually stimulating and deeply transformative. The coursework encouraged a balance of theory and application, and the professors’ openness to new perspectives enriched every discussion. The inclusive and diverse student community created an atmosphere where learning extended far beyond the classroom.
It has been an honour to be featured by UCL as an alumna with a successful career transition story - a recognition that reaffirms how profoundly the institution shapes its students. Making my professors and classmates proud remains one of my most meaningful achievements since graduating.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
My unique background as a Naval Officer set my application apart. The combination of leadership under pressure, cross-functional experience, and a clear career transition plan demonstrated both purpose and preparedness. I articulated how my professional journey aligned with CSC’s mission of development and global cooperation, and how my learnings could contribute to India’s growth story post-scholarship. The clarity of my goals, authenticity in storytelling, and evidence of impact likely made my application memorable.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Honestly, nothing. I began researching two years before applying, and that preparation paid off. My transition from the Navy was timely; I applied immediately after completing my service, maximised my study period, and secured a role at Austrade as Director soon after graduation. Every step was intentional. Planning is everything - it ensures efficient use of time and positions you for success. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Meticulous planning is the key to success. Begin early, research thoroughly, and align your academic goals with your long-term vision. Understand what each scholarship stands for and tailor your application accordingly - authenticity matters more than perfection. Seek mentorship, connect with past scholars, and don’t hesitate to think differently. For those transitioning careers, like I did, clarity of purpose and adaptability will be your greatest strengths. Remember, scholarships are not just about financial aid, they are about building future leaders who can create meaningful change.
