The Journey
My name is Kugbeme Isumonah, and I am a PhD student in Sociology at the University of Calgary, Canada. I also have a master’s degree in sociology from Oklahoma State University in the United States. Originally from West Africa, I chose to pursue graduate study in sociology because I considered it a necessary complement to my undergraduate degree in economics to make me a more well-rounded social scientist.
President's Doctoral Recruitment Scholarship Details
I am a recipient of the University of Calgary’s President's Doctoral Recruitment Scholarship in Transdisciplinary Research valued at $12,000 per year for four years. In addition, I have graduate and research assistantship funding valued at about $28,000 per year.
Educational Background
I have a bachelor’s degree in economics from Nigeria’s premier university, the University of Ibadan, and a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University. My undergraduate studies involved elective courses in sociology that helped prepare me for graduate studies in sociology. Quantitative training at the undergraduate and graduate levels has also helped set me up for success in my doctoral studies where I hope to write a dissertation using quantitative research methods.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the President's Doctoral Recruitment Scholarships and the University of Calgary?
The way I selected universities was based on my specific research interests. I also reached out to graduate program coordinators to inquire about available funding for international students. After narrowing down my options, I took the GRE and TOEFL exams to prepare for graduate school and scholarships. To adequately prepare for these exams, I reached out to colleagues who had written these tests in the past for useful tips. Additionally, I spent time reading comments on relevant forums and internet groups for useful advice on effective study materials and strategies. I ended up achieving a score of 310 on the GRE and 113 on my TOEFL exam.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my track record of academic success and solid communication skills set my application apart. Additionally, letters of recommendation from members of the faculty with whom I have worked closely further strengthened my application.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were going through the process again, I would take even more risks and aim even higher. I would not allow the fear of rejection to limit my decisions.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Ask questions. Often the main barrier between you and what you want is inadequate information. Asking the right questions can fill that void and set you up for success.
