The Journey
My name is KRY Kimhok, and I am from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I hold a Master of Science in International Commerce and Management from Université Catholique de Lille, France (2022–2024). My passion for economics and international relations began during my undergraduate studies, and I decided to pursue this Master’s degree because I wanted to strengthen my understanding of global trade, economic development, and management, particularly to apply this knowledge to Cambodia and the Southeast Asian region.
Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Details
I was awarded the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. The scholarship provided a monthly living allowance, health insurance, and round-trip international airfare. Although it did not cover tuition fees, this financial support was very helpful in allowing me to focus on my studies and research.
Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?
Yes. I have also been fortunate to receive other scholarships:
- French Cooperation Department’s Scholarship (2019) and Royal Government of Cambodia Scholarship (2018) – offered tuition fee waivers to support my dual Bachelor’s degree studies at the Royal University of Law and Economics.
- BELTEI International University’s Scholarship (2018) – provided a full tuition fee waiver.
Educational Background
- A Master’s degree in International Commerce and Management (Université Catholique de Lille, France).
- A Dual Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Management (Royal University of Law and Economics, Cambodia, and Université Lumière Lyon II, France).
- A Bachelor’s degree in International Relations (BELTEI International University, Cambodia).
These scholarships helped me continue my education and prepared me well for future applications, including the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Catholic University of Lille?
I researched institutions and scholarships mainly through official university websites and the French Ministry of Higher Education. I did not take standardized tests like the GRE/GMAT, but I demonstrated English proficiency through previous studies and academic work.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship?
To apply for scholarships, I spent time preparing a clear motivation letter that explained:
- My academic journey and experiences.
- My career goals related to Cambodia’s development and global trade.
- Why France was a good fit for my studies.
I also asked professors who knew my work to provide recommendation letters.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing French?
My classes were conducted in English, but living in France encouraged me to practice French. While international students can manage academically without French, learning the basics is very helpful for daily life and integration.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
- Start early. Research scholarships and requirements well in advance.
- Be clear. Show how your past studies and future goals connect.
- Ask for feedback. Professors or mentors can help improve your essays.
- Stay motivated. Even competitive scholarships are achievable with preparation.
