How an Indian IT Graduate Secured the Fully Funded Global Korea Scholarship to Pursue a Master’s in AI in Healthcare at Inje University

My name is Kounen Fathima, and I am originally from Hyderabad, India. I recently completed my Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare at Inje University, South Korea, as a recipient of the prestigious Global Korea Scholarship (GKS). Growing up in a middle-class family, my early exposure to computers came through my two elder brothers. We were among the first in our neighborhood to have a personal computer, and that opportunity sparked a lifelong curiosity in me. I was fascinated by how machines worked, and every new concept I explored opened the door to more questions—an experience that fueled my passion for technology.

This curiosity naturally led me to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology. When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted academic schedules, I used the unexpected time to explore another personal interest: Korean language and culture. My admiration for Korea’s innovation-driven society and global leadership in technology further strengthened my decision to pursue higher education there.

As my interest in AI deepened, I became particularly drawn to its applications in healthcare, an area where technology directly impacts lives. Enrolling in this interdisciplinary program felt like a natural extension of both my academic goals and personal values. Today, I am committed to contributing to the future of digital healthcare through the transformative power of artificial intelligence.

Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) Scholarship Details

In 2022, I was honored to receive the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), a fully funded program offered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under Korea’s Ministry of Education. This scholarship supported my Master’s degree at Inje University, covering full tuition, round-trip airfare, monthly living expenses, health insurance, and Korean language training. The total financial support amounted to approximately KRW 80 million (around USD 60,000). While I came across other scholarship opportunities, GKS stood out for its comprehensive support and the invaluable academic and cultural experiences it offered. Accepting it was a life-changing decision that shaped both my career and personal growth.

Educational Background

Prior to my Master's, I completed my Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) degree in Information Technology from Osmania University in India, graduating with a GPA of 7.89/10. My undergraduate studies provided a strong foundation in computer science, software development, and data structures—core skills that later supported my transition into Artificial Intelligence. I developed a particular interest in machine learning and natural language processing, and I engaged in various projects and self-directed learning to further strengthen my understanding. These experiences not only built my technical competence but also deepened my desire to apply AI in impactful domains like healthcare.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Inje University?

To apply for institutions abroad, I researched programs that aligned with my interests and goals. I discovered the GKS through official platforms and alumni forums and carefully prepared each component of the application—from my statement of purpose to recommendation letters—while also seeking insights from previous scholars. I began studying Korean well before my university interview and was determined to take the TOPIK exam. Despite the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, I self-studied intensively, driven by a genuine curiosity and deep interest in the language itself, and successfully achieved TOPIK Level 6 in just six months. This accomplishment allowed me to complete the required language training in half the time after joining under the GKS scholarship.

As for English proficiency, it wasn’t mandatory in my case since my entire education was conducted in English. I submitted a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate instead. Although language certificates didn’t earn extra points at the time, under the new GKS guidelines, I highly recommend applicants submit them, as they now offer additional benefits during evaluation.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe what made my application stand out was a clear and passionate personal statement. I articulated why I was drawn to AI in healthcare, why I chose Korea, and how this scholarship fits into my broader life goals. I also emphasized my desire to contribute to stronger India–Korea relations.

Although I came from a regular university that isn’t highly ranked internationally, I made every effort to demonstrate my passion and potential. I wanted the reviewers to see that, regardless of university prestige, I had the curiosity, dedication, and drive to grow and succeed. I consistently engaged in extracurricular activities, such as volunteering and participating in competitions related to my major, to show that I’ve always been an active learner and someone eager to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

Additionally, during the interview, I conducted the entire conversation in Korean, which left a strong impression on the panel and reflected both my commitment to the culture and my adaptability.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would start preparing even earlier, particularly for language tests like TOPIK and English certifications, which now offer additional application points. I would also spend more time researching the university and the specific lab I would be joining, as this plays a crucial role in both academic success and long-term career development, especially at the Master’s and PhD levels.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice to future applicants is to start early and stay organized. Focus on crafting a sincere personal statement that reflects your goals, motivations, and interest in the country and program. Learn the local language—it not only gives you an edge but also shows respect for the host culture. Don’t hesitate to reach out to alumni or online communities, as they offer practical advice and encouragement. Most importantly, believe in your story. You don’t need dramatic experiences to be worthy of this scholarship—authenticity and passion go a long way. Be honest about who you are, what you want to achieve, and why this opportunity matters to you. That honesty will carry you forward in ways you can't yet imagine.
