The Journey

My name is Konde Attah Felicia, and I am from Ghana. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Technology (BTech.) in Medical Laboratory Science at Bolgatanga Technical University. I chose this field because of my passion for human health and wellbeing, as well as my strong interest in healthcare, diagnostics, and improving patient outcomes through accurate laboratory investigations. My long-term goal is to contribute to strengthening health systems, advancing research in medical science, and ultimately giving back to my community as a whole.

Community College Initiative Program (CCIP) Details

I was awarded the Community College Initiative Program (CCIP) 2023/2024 cohort, funded by the U.S. Department of State and supported by my home institution, Bolgatanga Technical University. This fully funded scholarship gave me the opportunity to study Basic and Advanced Biotechnology at Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington, Kentucky. The award covered tuition, housing, health insurance, travel expenses, and living stipends.

The program was built around five key pillars that shaped my academic and personal growth:

  • Academics – gaining strong classroom knowledge and hands-on training.
  • Cultural Exchange – engaging with people from different backgrounds and cultures.
  • Service Learning (Volunteering) – giving back to the community through meaningful service.
  • Internship – gaining real-world work experience in my field of study.
  • Community Impact Project (CIP) – designing and implementing a project that addressed a need within the community.

Educational Background

Before the Community College Initiative Program, I studied Medical Laboratory Technology at Bolgatanga Technical University in Ghana. I successfully completed my HND with strong grades, which built my foundation in clinical laboratory science. Through hard work, I was honored to graduate with distinctions and received membership into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society during my time in the U.S. My prior training in laboratory sciences, combined with volunteering and internships, prepared me well for both academic study and leadership opportunities.
